TheStar Warssaga is a truly enchanting piece of work the way it is, thanks to the magnificent brains of filmmaker cum philanthropist George Lucas. But while fans have come to love the space lore just the way it ended up being, a lot of them don’t know that it would have never been this way because of all the uncountable ideas the mastermind had for his iconic saga.

For instance, one of these drafts saw a different story unfold for the love triangle situation between Luke Skywalker, Leia Skywalker, and Han Solo inEpisode V – The Empire Strikes Back. And this version was a bit too brutally planned (emotionally) because it had Anakin Skywalker’s Darth Vader torture his own son Luke to win him over to the Dark Side through his love for Princess Leia.
George Lucas Initially Planned for Darth Vader to Torture Luke Differently inThe Empire Strikes Back
1980’sStar Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Backwas only the second movie in theSWfilm series (at the time), and yet, it still ranks as one of the greatest bombshells of all time. While the revelation ofthe secret that Anakin Skywalker’s Vader was indeed Luke’s fatherwas one thing, the film also earned a major commendation for all its twists and turns.
One of these twists originally planned by Lucas included a slightly different fate forMark Hamill‘s Skywalker when he was being tortured by Vader to turn to the dark side forall the glory and power. According toWIRED, the second draft that Lucas made forEpisode Vincluded the father Skywalker using his son’s love for Leia to try and win him over to the Dark Side.

In this version of the early drafts, mastermindGeorge Lucaswrote Anakin’s Vader’s dialogue to Hamill’s Skywalker as (as per WIRED):
You’re in love with Leia. You don’t want to lose her to Han Solo…. But you will, if you lack the courage to use the strength that’s in you. A strength as great as mine, Luke.

Nowthatwould have indeed been a worthy plot twistthat would have definitely made fans believethat their favorite Skywalker just may cross over to the Dark Side, just like his father. However, presumably because of a change of mind and plans by Lucas, this narrative never made it to the screens and fans were devoid of it having ever existed.

But this version of the script had something similar to the one that scored its golden ticket to the big screens: Hamill’s Skywalker facingflat-outrejection fromCarrie Fisher‘s Leia nonetheless as she ends up choosingHarrison Ford‘s Han Solo over him since she’s into Han.
Besides this twist, this draft also had something different to unfold for Han Solo’s story.

George Lucas Planned a Different Future for Han Solo as well
As fans know from the movie, Leia is seen confessing her love for Han Solo beforeDavid Prowse‘s Anakin Skywalker freezes him in carbonite during his attempt to lure Hamill’s Skywalker into his trap to see if Luke could safely fall victim to him and get imprisoned by him in a similar manner.
However, in the early drafts, Han Solo hadsomething else written forhim as well.

As per WIRED, Lucas had originally planned that instead of getting frozen in carbonite the way Vader intends him to, Han flies off from the place in the Millennium Falcon to“take care of business,”leavingboth Leia and Lukebehind, despite the former only just turning down someone who was her brother (a fact she didn’t know back then) for him.
Well, for whatever it’s worth, considering all of these situations, it seemsit was only for the betterthat George Lucas ended up scrapping his original ideas for the fan-favorite movie.
