The match was controversial from the beginning as Roman Reigns had become a controversial figure for the fans. Reigns had won the Royal Rumble that year, a decision that was not welcomed by the fans at the time as they expected Daniel Bryan to face off against Brock Lesner atWrestleMania. While Bryan defeated Seth Rollins to face Reigns at the Fastlane event, he lost to Reigns, giving the latter the edge to fight Lesner.

The wrestler had won it a few months ago and cashed in his contract to enter the ring, turning it into a Triple Threat match.
