Mark Wahlberg has shown that he is actually more than willing to go to unexpected heights for his roles, just to deliver what the story requires of him. His dedication and commitment toward the same is nothing short of commendable, considering how the master bodybuilder once didn’t hesitate to double down on proteins and food items to bulk his muscles.

While, in today’s day and age in Hollywood, Wahlberg is easily one of the most fit and physically active actors in the entire entertainment industry, there was a time when he used to wake up in the middle of the night just to start gorging food like a madman. This he did for the sake of his character in his $86 million commercial hit that failed to appease most critics.
Mark Wahlberg doubled down on proteins forPain & Gain
Back when he was cast in the action comedy-drama that circled a couple of bodybuilders scheming to kidnap a wealthy client, Wahlberg was one of the names selected alongside the then-6’5, 265 pounds beast,Dwayne Johnson. But there was a problem: He had just slimmed down to 160 pounds forTed, and he had to gain weight to avoid being dwarfed by his mammoth co-star.
Thus, he embarked on the not-so-pretty mission of gaining some extra muscles. As theFamily Guyactor confessed in an interview withMen’s Health, he was actually eating twelve meals a day. How is that even humanly possible, you ask? “Well, sometimes you have to get up in the middle of the night for a meal,” Wahlberg says.

For the record, getting up in the middle of the night actually included him giving up on a considerable amount of his sleep as well. AsMark Wahlbergcontinued to share, he wasn’t sleeping “as much as I wanted. I’d have a big meal and go to bed at 9 pm, and then I’d get up at midnight to eat again, and I’d still be full from the last meal.”
“Then I saw the movie. I went, ‘Holy sh*t’”: Mark Wahlberg Did Not Think Things Through When He Rejected a $2.2B Franchise That Went To Chris Hemsworth
Okay, that most certainly sounds horrible, because who would want to sacrifice their sleep for a meal, especially when they’re still full from their last meal? But that’s exactly what it was, forevenThe Unionactor admitted to itas he said,
It kinda’ was. And then you exercise first thing in the morning and eat all day, and you attempt to take as many naps and rest as much as possible. Especially after eating, because you feel like you’re growing while you’re sleeping.

So eating a bit too frequent meals all day long that left him full, exercising like there was no tomorrow first thing in the morning, and taking as many naps as possible instead of properly spending the night sleeping was what went into Wahlberg’s transformation forPain & Gain? Brutal enough for sure.
Mark Wahlberg’s workout routine to bulk forPain & Gainwill leave you nauseous
While eating good food and having a healthy protein intake sounds like a good option, what Mark Wahlberg had to do to gain the perfect physique to play Daniel Lugo in the critically panned film from 2013 was far from that. If anything, even the workout routine was so filled with overeating to the brim thatit could leave just anyone nauseouseven just by reading it.
As theDaddy’s Homeactor continued to share during the same interview,

I’d wake up at 4:30 every morning, have a nice big breakfast—a pre-workout igniter—and then I’d hit the heavyweights, depending on the day and the routine for the day. But it always involved lifting heavy, and mostly just lifting weights. And then a protein shake right after the workout. And then chicken, steak, fish, a little bit of pasta here and there.

As nauseating as that overeating routine sounds, it really was just “overloading, meal after meal after meal,” as Wahlberg put it. In fact, all of this got so brutal to the point where the actor himself admitted that “Food really did stop having any real taste for me.”
Well, that said, when it comes to the general and critical reviews of the said film, things don’t really seem to have worked out, considering how the flick stands at a meager 49% critical and 47% audience score onRotten Tomatoes.

At the same time, it didn’t entirely go down the drain, since it turned out to be a huge commercial success, making $87 million from its global box office performance on its budget of $26 million (viaBox Office Mojo), so that’s that too.
Pain & Gain can currently be streamed on Prime Video.
