The High Republic Era of the canonStar Warstimeline is finally being explored under Disney, and fans are a little more than miffed about the wayThe Acolytehas been handled. From canon-breaking lore to confusing character motivations, and no consistency of rules the world sets for itself, Leslye Headland has created a mystery thriller that says taking itself seriously but fails to show it.

Headland spoke to StarWars.com about what she wanted to accomplish withThe Acolyte, wanting to create a gateway show for new fans, who are not necessarily well-versed with the lore and the material of the Extended Universe. However, in a bid to do so, the director might have alienated long-time fans of the franchise.

Leslye Headland created a story that does not require any homework

The Acolytetakes place in the High Republic era of theStar Warstimeline, something that Disney had not explored. However, Headland stepped into the timeline, placing her story about a hundred years before the events ofThe Phantom Menace. Speaking toStarWars.com, she said:

Usually, with entries into theStar Warsfranchise, fans were required to know a lot of backstory to make sense of the movie that they were going to watch. Unlike them,The Acolyteis made for fans who are not that deep into the lore ofStar Wars, creating an original canon for the Disney timeline, distinct from the Legends timeline.

In a bid to create a story for new fans,Leslye Headlandmanaged toalienate the core fanbase ofStar Wars, with the amount of things the show invented forStar Wars, despite it being a prequel.

With the introduction of a Sith before Darth Maul who made himself known, and the metal Cortosis which can short out lightsabers, theStar Warsuniverse is forever changed, flying in the place everything set up by 50 years of lore building.

Even newerStar Warsfans, that perhaps began their journey with the sequel trilogy, realize the blunder thatThe Acolytehas nurtured with it’s story. While there are episodes that are yet to be aired that could fix the story, the worldbuilding of the show has made it so that it does not fit in the franchise like it is supposed to.
