Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, whose last film as Pepper Potts in the MCU was 2019’sAvengers: Endgame, has opened up about the current state of the franchise. In one of her recent interviews, the actress explained that these big-budget superhero moves are failing because they put a lot at risk but fail to please everyone as they aim to churn out profits. The actress’ response was to Cord Jefferson’s recent Oscar speech, in which he stated that studios should focus on “making 20 $10 million movies” instead of “one $200 million movie.”

With Robert Downey Jr’s MCU journey wrapped up, the actress feels like there is no place for Pepper Potts in the franchise but she is ready to return as the character if Marvel approaches her. Last year, the actress toldEntertainment Tonightthat she would only return to the franchise if Downey Jr convinces her.

“People put a lot of money into these things and they want them to be profitable. But if I look at the industry as a whole, this big push into superhero movies… you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original, and yet they’re still always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality or specificity or real point of view.”

Paltrow meant that studios take huge risks with their movies and only hope for a profit. In this process, the quality suffers and the content doesn’t stand out. Some of Marvel’s recent big-budget films likeThe Marvels,Madame Web, andAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumaniawere annihilated by the critics.

Further in the interview, Paltrow backed up low-budget films she believes that there is less risk and allows creators to experiment with their ideas,
“You get more diversity of art when there is less at stake and people can express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it. Those are generally the more resonant ones.”

Paltrow’s last performance as Pepper Potts was inAvengers: Endgame(2019) and now, the actress feels like there is no place for her in the franchise. Last year,Paltrow was askedby a user on Instagramabout her future in the MCU, and the actress said, “Why do you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man?” As of now, the actress is occupied with her business ventures. However, she is still open to returning as Pepper Potts.
