TheNieR Reincarnationstream on February 2 (full summary) included a scenario team discussion, featuring Yoko Taro explaining their work process. Thispart of the streamwas only accessible to Niconico premium members. We summarized it below.

This part of the stream featured Yosuke Saito, Yoko Taro, Daichi Matsukawa, and two scenarists. Matsuo, and Takashi Ohara.

The segment started with the two scenarists introducing themselves

Matsuo is also known as Daily Matsuo, and used to write atFamitsu. He most notably was the outlet’sDragon Questspecialist. Now, he works at Square Enix under Yoko Taro as one of theNieRReincarnationscenarists.

Yoko Taro:“We have connections with Famitsu so I hope we’ll get nice reviews”.

Takashi Ohara in comparison is much younger. Moreover, Ohara is not only one of the scenarists but is also the BGM planner. He’s the one deciding which BGM should play on which story part.

The scenarists and Yoko Taro then explained their work style

First off, Yoko Taro explained there are actually more scenarists on the team. They might appear in future streams. They each have quirks which are reflected in the stories they write.

Basically, both Yoko Taro and the team write the game. The team members write stuff, show it to Yoko Taro, and get feedback and advice. Daily Matsuo explained Yoko Taro can be quite harsh, but even someone with a lot of writing experience like himself is learning a lot.

Yoko Taro also shared with the scenarist team his way of writing stories. They mentioned he could definitely release everything he taught them as a book “How to write stories by Yoko Taro” .

Surprisingly, whenNieR Reincarnation’s development began, the first thing the scenario team did was keyboard training. Yoko Taro, and Daily Matsuo thanks to his past job at Famitsu, can type extremely fast. But everyone else on the team was very slow. So that’s what they focused on at first instead of actually writing the scenario.

Lastly, Ohara mentioned he’s a huge fan of Yoko Taro’s games himself. He highly respects Yoko Taro and how he genuinely thinks about reaching the players when writing his stories. Now, Ohara wants to write something that will definitely satisfy other Yoko Taro fans.

That’s all regarding the Yoko Taro and scenario team discussion forNieR Reincarnation. Thorough the stream, Yoko Taro also revealed several fun tidbits, like how he actuallynever spent any moneyon a gacha game.

The nextNieR Reincarnationstream is set for February 16. The game itself launches on February 18 in Japan. Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro are also working ontwo other gamesat Square Enix.
