The MCU, despite criticism, has remained big on the representation of numerous genders, races, sexualities, etc. over the years. The highest-grossing franchise of all time, started this year with a bang too when it comes to representation. By introducing an original Native American character for the MCU at the end of last year, Kahhori, and now with its seriesEcho, the franchise has been earning much praise and acclaim for its decision.

However, if there is praise there is bound to be some criticism as well, for soon enough many called MCU’s decision repetitive. And Devery Jacobs, who voiced Kahhori, as well as stars inEchohit back at the criticism.

Having a Native American superhero, Kahhori inWhat If…?,wasn’t something that Marvel fans were expecting but as soon as episode 6 of its second season hit the screens, the character totally stole the show. Not only was the character welcomed by fans and critics alike, but it also showed once again why the MCU is as big as it has gotten.

However, whenEcho, another Native American superhero/anti-hero debuted on January 9 on Disney+, many took to social media to claim it was repetitive or MCU attempting to please Diversity callers. However,Devery Jacobswho stars in both shows, hit back at all the hate MCU has been receiving (viaThe Hollywood Reporter),

“Would somebody go up to a white guy and say, ‘This is the one perspective for a white story that is out there’? Would somebody go and say that? That’s egregious, that’s insane that anybody would say that.”

Devery Jacobs Feels Both Kahhori And Echo’s Stories Are Equally Deserving

Alaqua Cox‘sEchowas released on January 9, and the reviews and audience and critics’ reception have been looking promising so far. However, there is a certain crowd that feels having yet again another Native American superhero after Kahhori’s splendid debut feels too repetitive.

Devery Jacobs, who stars as Bonnie in the series, stated while talking to The Hollywood Reporter how both characters are extremely different and both their stories are equally deserving of being told.

“I don’t even know if it’s justifiable for an answer, but I’ll give one anyway. I think that the story of Kahhori in What If…? is astronomically different from that of Maya Lopez in Echo. I think one is talking about colonization and history and features Mohawk cultures and communities — the community that I come from — and the other is about an anti-hero, kind of a villain, who is coming back to her Choctaw Nation and to her family, and it’s really a dark crime noir family drama. And so, they’re both individual stories that absolutely deserve to be told.”

And while a section of netizens continue to criticize MCU, the majority of fans and critics have been feeling elated to see Marvel’s new narrative and can hardly wait to see what it has in store for them in 2024.

BothEchoandWhat If…?can be streamed on Disney+.
