Why the English release ofMahotsukai no Yoruon PS4 and Switch is historical
This is not only the first time thatWitch on the Holy Nightgets officially localized in English, it’s the first time a pure Type-Moon visual novel is officially localized as well. While Type-Moon worked on games like428 Shibuya Scrumble, it was a joint project with Spike Chunsoft.
TheMahotsukai no Yoru2012 game is considered to be one of the best visual novels ever. Most notably thanks to its incredible screenplay. The game’s illustrations were handled by Hirokazu Koyama, who didn’t illustrate as many Type-Moon works as Takashi Takeuchi, but he has been working with Type-Moon for a while. Hirokazu Koyamapublished a special illustrationof Aoko Aozaki to celebrate the anime’s reveal.

Who is Aoko Aozaki, the Protagonist ofWitch on the Holy Night? Age, Powers and Abilities
The protagonist ofWitch on the Holy Nightis genius magician Aoko Aozaki, a name that should ring a bell if you’re familiar with theNasuverse.Witch on the Holy Nightstars a younger, 17 years old Aoko attending high school, and she most notably doesn’t sport her iconic vividly red hair seen inTsukihimeorFate. The story takes place in the 80s, many years beforeTsukihime.
Aoko has a strong, cheerful personality as displayed inWitch on the Holy Nightseeing she’s the student council president at her high school. As for her fighting style, Aoko fights using martial arts and magic bullets akin to shooting blue lasers. Lastly, as the successor of her grandfather’s Fifth Magic, Aoko can alter time and reality.
To give you a spoiler-free summary,Witch on the Holy Nightdeals with Aoko’s beginnings as a magician after her grandfather and leader of the Aozaki family suddenly decided to name her as his successor. This was a last-minute change as Aoko’s older sister Touko Aozaki was always supposed to inherit him, so this event sours the relationship between the two sisters.
to learn magic, Aoko starts living in the mansion of Alice Kuonji, a girl around her age but who is much more experimented with magic. To crown it all, Aoko ends up being seen using magic by Soujyurou Shizuki, one of the boys at her school. While Alice initially orders Aoko to kill Soujyurou to keep the existence of magicians a secret, they ultimately decide to let Soujyurou live with them in the mansion to monitor him.

Link withThe Garden of Sinners(Kara no Kyoukai) Explained
The first story written by Nasu that started theNasuversewasMahotsukai no Yoru, released in 1996. Later on came theKara no Kyoukai The Garden of Sinnersnovels in 1998. Studio Ufotable adapted these novels into seven anime movies released from 2007 to 2009.
Kara no Kyoukaimost notably features Aoko’s older sister Touko as one of its main characters. Touko acts as the mentor and employer of the story’s protagonist Ryougi Shiki. Touko most notably helps Ryougi control her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. Long story short these are one-of-a-kind magic eyes that lets Ryougi see lines on anything, and cutting these lines kills the target whoever or whatever they are.
TheKara no Kyoukai The Garden of Sinnersanime movies were highly successful. Hence why Studio Ufotable handles everyNasuverseanime nowadays such as the anime adaptations ofFGO. Younger anime fans associate Ufotable withDemon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba, but older fans when hearing Ufotable immediately think of theNasuverse(and tax evasion, but that’s another story).

Witch on the Holy Night- Link withTsukihimeExplained
Tsukihimeis originally a PC game released by Type-Moon in 2000. It’s basically the third part of theNasuverse, afterMahoyoandKara no Kyoukai. The protagonist ofTsukihimeis Tohno Shiki, who during his childhood, suddenly earned the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, the same ability as Ryougi Shiki, though the two characters are completely unrelated except for sharing the same first name.
A few days later after awakening his Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Tohno ended up meeting with Aoko, who was already an adult and a full-fledged magician at that point. They became friends and Touko helped out Tohno by giving him special glasses. Aoko stole these glasses from her sister Touko, and they can return a magic eyes' user’s vision back to normal. While it technically doesn’t cancel Tohno’s powers, as the lines still exist even if he can’t see them, it allows him to lead a normal life until high school.
All of this happens in the prologue ofTsukihime, and Aoko doesn’t appear in the game itself. The actualTsukihimegame, to give you a spoiler-free summary, deals with Tohno’s involvement with vampires and the members of the church who hunt them.
Last but to least, it’s interesting to take a look atTsukihime - A piece of blue glass moon -.TheTsukihime remakethat released in 2021. The game’s first opening anime sequence has the exact same shot of Aoko looking over her shoulder as in theWitch on the Holy Nightkey visual.Tsukihime Remakealso has a sequel in development. After years of theFatepart of Nasuverse getting all the honors thanks toFGO, more and moreTsukihimerelated projects are happening now.
Aoko Aozaki is playable in fighting game spinoffMelty Blood
Tsukhimealso has a fighting game spinoff series calledMelty Blood. A new game calledMelty Blood Type Luminawas released in 2021 on PC and all consoles, and Aoko Aozaki is one of the playable characters. You can get a very clear idea of Aoko’s fighting style and personality by checking out theMelty Blood Type Luminagameplay video below.
Link BetweenMahotsukai no Yoru, Fate/stay nightand Its SpinoffsFate/Grand Order (FGO),Fate/Zero,Lord El-Melloi, etc
TheFatefranchise is pretty detached fromMahotsukai no Yoru,Kara no Kyoukai, Tsukihime, Melty Blood, etc. Long story short, TheFateseries is set in an alternate universe. Even if theTsukihimeuniverse andFateuniverse share characters, there are very few links between the two, and most characters from one series only appear as short cameos in the other.
For example, Aoko only directly appears inFate/Extra, a PSP visual novel with dungeon crawler RPG elements.Fate/Extraand its sequelFate/Extra CCCmade Nasu realize he should greatly expand theFateuniverse, creatingFGO, one of the most popular mobile games in Japan.Fate/Extracurrently has a remake in development. A live stream for the remake was held back in 2020. Read our summarieshereandhere.
It’s Fine to Start WithWitch on the Holy Night& Why You Shouldn’t Care About All These Links
Lastly, you might be wondering about how to get into theNasuverseand if you’ll be fine playingWitch on the Holy Nightwhen it releases in English. The answer is yes, you can totally start withWitch on the Holy Night.
Witch on the Holy Night. like all other works in theNasuverse, is pretty much a standalone story. At the end of the day, each part of theNasuversecan be enjoyed on its own. WhenWitch on the Holy Nightreleases on PS4 and Switch in 2022, it will be a great way to enter the franchise even if you don’t know anything about it.
You’ll enjoy theNasuveseeven more if you may connect the dots. But it’s fine if you don’t. The Nasuverse isn’t the MCU with post-credit cliffhangers leading to another material. It’s much better, and each part doesn’t have a direct influence on one another.
That’s all for our introduction ofWitch on the Holy Night, which has a game coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in English in December 2022, and an anime movie by Ufotable releasing in 2023. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
