Last year, a series calledBlack Cakewas released on Hulu and Disney based on the New York best-selling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. The murder mystery thriller ended its first season after the finale debuted on June 25, 2025. Following the conclusion, there were some hopeful updates regarding the second season.

However, a year later, reports have been rife that the series won’t return for another season. Though the news is not surprising, as it’s been 10 months since the show’s first season ended, the reason isn’t quite valid. In this article, we will explain why the second season got canceled.

The decision to cancel the show came a few months ago. As perDeadline, Netflix was among the original streaming platforms for the project that didn’t work out at the time, and the series premiered on Hulu after a bidding war. But somehow, it didn’t happen as these deals rarely work out, despite the series receiving 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and rave reviews from the viewers.
The show also landed on the NAACP Image Awards nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series for Cerar, along with a GLAAD Media Awards nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

After the success of season one, the creator and showrunner of the seriesBlack Cake, Marissa Jo Cerar once hinted at the second season while talking on theWashington PostYouTube livestream. She said,
Well, I just didn’t know how you would tell all of these stories in two to two and a half hours or three hours, depending on how long movies are… I wanted to tell every character story. It is not just Covey’s story, it is not just Eleanor’s story, it is Benny’s story, it is Byron’s story, it is Mabel’s story it is Bunny’s story, it is Lin’s story, Pearl’s story, Mathilda’s story. These are all the people who are in Covey’s life and I always say that Season 1 is act one of Benny, Byron, and Mabel’s stories, and Bunny’s too.

Post this interview, the fans were waiting in anticipation for the second season. Even the cast members were excited about the idea of having another season. Mia Issac toldBET, “It would be great if there were a second season.” But this new cancellation update has disappointed everyone.

Marissa Jo Cerar collaborated withOprah Winfrey‘s Harpo Films and Aaron Kaplan‘s Kapital Entertainment for this project. Starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac in the lead, the murder thriller is set in the 1960s, spanning several locations, including Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England, and Southern California.
The storyline revolves around two stories – one is about two siblings, Benny and Byron Bennett, played by Adrienne Warren and Ashley Thomas, and a runaway bride, Covey (Mia Issac), who disappears into the surf of the coast of Jamaica. She is feared to be drowned or an escapee on the run for her husband’s murder. Eleanor Bennett leaves her children with a flash drive that holds many secrets of her life after losing her battle to cancer.
