It’s hard for fans to imagine anyone other than new Hollywood sensation Glen Powell in the Hangman role inTop Gun: Maverick. However, one DC star revealed that he almost landed a role in the film, probably that of Hangman.Arrowstar Stephen Amell shared that he had a hectic schedule playing Oliver Queen and couldn’t have taken time off to play the role inTop Gun 2.

Amell shared that he was initially pissed off at his agents who got him an audition in the film. He was further frustrated when he saw Powell perform the role in the film. While Powell went on to star in hit movies, Amell is set to play the lead role in the LA-set spinoff toSuits.

Stephen Amellrecently appeared on a chat with YouTuber Chris Van Vliet and opened up about his TV and wrestling career. While talking about his hectic schedule onArrowwhich usually began in July and lasted until April, he also talked about his one lost role. He recalled landing an audition inTop Gun: Maverick.

Amell was not sure which role he was called in for, but he guessed that it could’ve been the role played byGlen Powell. Interestingly, Powell was initially reluctant to take on the role due to it being underdeveloped. However,Tom Cruise intervened and convinced Powellto join the cast, offering him greater control over the character (via LA Times).

Amell remembered telling off his agents for bringing the role to him. He basically told them that there would be a BootCamp just to learn“how to behave in an F-18”, which was shorter than his hiatus between seasons ofArrow. When Van Vliet asked whether he saw the film, Amell shared that he had to watch it.

Amell shared that he got so mad when he watched the film. He wished all the success to the actors in the film but shared that he was frustrated that he missed the chance to star in the sequel to his favorite childhood film. Stephen Amell shared withChris Van Vliet:

I had to. When I watched it, I was so mad. Look, I’m happy for everyone that was in that movie. God bless them. It was amazing. But like Top Gun was my favorite movie growing up. So just to kind of have that tantalizing possibility of being in it knowing that I was never going to be able to do it. But yeah I still had to go see it.

The role of Jake “Hangman” Seresin was Powell’s breakout role despite debuting in the industry more than a decade ago. He went on to star in hit films likeAnyone But You,Hit Man, and the most recent blockbusterTwisters. Amell last played the role of Oliver Queen inArrowin 2020.

During the interview with Van Vliet, Amell shared that he auditioned for the role in the series, which was his first in-person audition sinceTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesin 2015. He came to know later that it took only Korsh 15 seconds to confirm Amell in the role of Ted Black. He also revealed that the offer came with a few contingencies which were later taken away.
