Jim Carreyappeared as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the first installment ofSonic the Hedgehogreceiving critical acclaim for his performance. He reprised the role in its 2022 sequel and the third installment which premiered on July 29, 2025.
Carrey spoke withColliderto discuss his work in the movie, this time appearing as two characters – Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald Robotnik. In the interview, Carrey was asked about the challenges of playing dual roles in the movie.

Carrey made the above comment, explaininghis process of getting into the role of Robotnikand his grandfather.

The Academy Award winner explained that he initially did some groundwork for the characters, thinking about the intellectual aspects of playing two roles. However, as soon as he got to the set, he freaked out about the physicality of the two characters, which admittedly proved quite demanding for the actor.

In the same conversation, Carrey discussed appearing in two different roles inSonic 3. Aside from Robotnik, Carrey will also play Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the iconic video game character, who was first introduced inSonic Adventure 2.
Carrey teased the interpersonal dynamic between the grandfather and grandson that viewers will get to see in the threequel.
His heart opens up a little bit he becomes like a little puppy dog kind of like trying to impress his grandpa.
Carrey made the above statement, underlining the humanity of his villainous character that he tried to explore in the third installment. Furthermore,the semi-retired staradded that unlike Robotnik his grandfather had a hard shell, implying a tough-love approach towards his grandson.

At the same time, despite some similarities in their personality, Carrey admitted to approaching both characters as totally different individuals. Aside from Carrey, most of the main cast from the previous installments reprise their roles with the addition of Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog.
