Nintendo, The Pokemon Company and Game Freak have finally revealedPokemon Scarlet and Violeton Switch with a surprise announcement during Pokemon Day, with a trailer revealing some gameplay and the starters - Here are the original Japanese names of the Gen 9 starters.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetwas announced onthe Pokemon Day showcasecelebrating the 26th anniversary of the series on February 27. Just like any new region, over a hundred new pokemon will be joining the family, and the three traditional starters we’ll be able to pick to begin our new adventure were already revealed.

Pokemon Scarlet and VioletStarters Sprigatito Fuecoco Quaxly Japanese names revealed

Sprigatito Japanese name

In Japanese, Sprigatito is named Nyaoha ニャオハ. “Nya” is the onomatopoeia for cat barking sounds in Japanese. The Japaneseofficial descriptionmentions it’s basically a spoiled and selfish cat pokemon. Sprigatito/Nyaoha is the Grass-type Starter.

Fuecoco Japanese name

In Japanese, Fuecoco is called Hogeeta ホゲータ. The Japanese description mentions it’s a chill crocodile doing things at its own pace. Fuecoco/Hogeeta is the Fire-type Starter.

Quaxly Japanese name

In Japanese, Quaxly is called Kewass ケワッス. The Japanese official description mentions it’s a clean freak duck pokemon with a serious personality. Quaxly/Kewass is the Water-type Starter.

Personally speaking, I’d say the localization for the names is pretty ingenious as always, and tries to keep the animal references for each of the names. It’s hard to pick a favorite yet especially as we have yet to see the 2nd and 3rd final evolutions. This will play a big role on who I end up picking.
