Denzel Washington has been riding a wave of rave reviews for his performance in Ridley Scott’sGladiator II. The sequel to his seminal 2000 historical film has been treated with mostly positive reviews ahead of its premiere. While on a press junket for the film, Denzel Washington let slip an important MCU titbit that might hint at what’s to come in the franchise.

According to Washington, Ryan Coogler is busy incorporating a part into the thirdBlack Pantherfilm that is particularly being written for the Man on Fire alum. While there have been no official announcements about the film from Marvel, there might be one role suited for the actor that could hint at the story of theBlack Pantherthreequel.

Denzel Washington could be playing the role of Bashinga in the MCU

As great of an actor asDenzel Washingtonis, it cannot be denied that the actor has gotten old. This could indicate thathis role inBlack Panther 3will not necessarily be an action-heavy one. Bashenga was the first Black Panther, a shaman warrior, who could visit Shuri or T’Challa II in the ancestral plane, offering them guidance into the future. It remains to be seen what the story of the third film will be, with fans rooting for T’Challa II to take over as the Black Panther through some time-travel or multiversal plot points.

Alternatively, given that Marvel has put Harrison Ford in a motion capture suite forCaptain America: Brave New World, Denzel Washington could play a more active role in the narrative, perhaps as an original character in the MCU, or a supporting character ripped right from the comics.

Black Panther III could finally unite Storm and T’Challa

In all the continuities that Marvel has, there is not a single child that T’Challa has had who has been named after him, save the Marvel Cineamtic Universe. Given that the franchise is reluctant to cast Chadwick Boseman after his tragic passing, this seems like a good workaround in the MCU to have a Black Panther named T’Challa, without having to toe the recasting line.

Given thatSecret Warsis definitely going to to blow the multiverse wide open, T’Challa II could be aged up, or have an aged-up version of him come into the past for one reason or the other. This character could play out all the stories that require T’Challa in them, including, but not limited to the Wakandan monarch marrying Storm. Given that Kevin Feige has stated that the X-Men are going to be important to the MCU afterSecret Wars, it might be a great way to keep Black Panther a relevant character in the MCU.
