The previous episode was all about the encounter between King Canute and Eadric, and the former’s intense desire to rule over England, for which he went to unexpected measures. Now, the upcoming episode will continue to shed light on Thorfinn and Einer. As usual, the official website of Vinland Saga released a preview video for episode 6, titled “I Want a Horse,” and also a little synopsis, which is as follows:
“Thorfinn and Einar wanted a workhorse to efficiently clear the vast forest. However, there was no one to lend the two slaves a horse, and when they were lost, they met an eccentric old man who called himself Sverkel.”
What Happened Previously On Vinland Saga?
The episode opened with a little flashback of Canute, where we saw him facing downward while Askeladd beheading King Sweyn fearlessly. After the king’s death, England and Denmark were at war again with the Viking army under Canute’s command. Moreover, Ethelred II had returned from Normandy and reinstated himself as the true king of England, which started a conflict between Canute and Ethelred for the throne.
Canute traveled to Mercia and saw devastated lands as a result of the long-going war. He met Thorkell and Floki and decided to meet Earl Eadric against the suggestions of his men. Thorkell, as usual, was excited about the war and stated that it was inevitable, and Canute agreed with him. In the meeting with Eadric, he offered Canute vast treasures and offered to add more in exchange for leaving Mercia. Canute denied Eadric’s offer and, instead, made him an offer, asking him to betray Ethelred and keep Mercia in exchange.
Edric refused Canute’s offer, after which the latter took him outside and showed him signal fire across Mercia’s horizons. Canute stated that that was how Mercia would look if he refused to cooperate. The following year, we witnessed Ethelred II’s death from illness, after which his son succeeded, but he died of illness in a short time. Ultimately, Canute had been crowned the new king of England.
