In total, there are five axes that can be crafted inValheim. These include the Stone Axe, Flint Axe, Iron Axe, Black Metal Axe, and the Bronze Axe. For this guide though, we’re only going to be looking at the stats of the Iron Axe, and the Black Metal Axe. These are the fourth and fifth axe type that become available to players and are able to rival the sword in terms of stats.
The first axe we’re going to look at is the Iron Axe, which can be crafted using wood, iron, and leather scraps. Similar to the swords, the axes also have four different quality types.

Which Is Best For Combat?
So who comes out on top in theValheimsword vs axe debate? Well, in terms of the stats, the Black Metal Axe is capable of much higher slash than the Iron Sword. However, using the Black Metal Axe means forfeiting the ability to parry. If you choose to use a sword over an axe, this means you’ll be able to make use of the special ability that can do increased damage and stun mobs by pressing the middle mouse button.
The axe offers dual functionality of not only being able to chop down trees but also deal damage to mobs. However, in terms of pure combat, we’d recommend a sword. Not only is the sword lighter and quicker to swing, but the special ability of stunning enemies and dealing high damage makes it a no brainer.
