The golden age of young adult dystopian films is already behind us, but some are still attempting to change that. Take, for instance, Joey King’s new Netflix movie. Based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld,Ugliesrevolves around a future post-apocalyptic dystopian society where everyone is compelled to look pretty.

While it sounds like an interesting and relevant story that many can relate to, especially with the beauty standards of today, fans of the novel didn’t feel like it captured the essence of the book.
Fans Despised Netflix Adaptation ofUglies
Joey Kingis known by many for her stint in Netflix’sThe Kissing Booth, and ever since her rise to fame, she became involved in the film industry. In fact, not only did she star in theUgliesadaptation, but she also served as an executive producer. That only reveals she’s very confident about the success of the project.
Uglies Review — Another Lackluster Joey King Netflix Release
Apparently, fans of the book don’t seem to share the same enthusiasm as the 25-year-old star. Many expressed dismay after watching it because they believed the plot moved too fast without even showcasing the emotional aspects found in the source material. Some even think it is way worse than the$288 millionDivergentmovie andThe Maze Runnersaga.
Both titles were notably criticized for being underdeveloped and just transformed the narrative into action films with no character depth. That being said, fans claimingUglieswas even more unbearable only makesShailene Woodley’s andDylan O’Brien’s movies look like masterpieces. Check out fans’ reactions below:

UGLIES is dreadful and almost unwatchable. It makes movies like Divergent and The Maze Runner look like masterpieces. Maybe the books are better, but this was just awful on all fronts. Stay away from it for your own goodpic.twitter.com/ii6HxIt74c
Either Uglies is just not for me, or this is a truly horrendous film. It makes Divergent look good, which is astounding

i feel like its moving too fast they should have made this at least 8 episodes#Uglies#UgliesOnNetflix
right! the plot was moving so fast and it had substance but it lacked the emotional aspects of the book and the bonding between the characters.

UGLIES was just bad. Not just in terms of being too generic & predictable but it was also lifeless with a tiresome played-out YA story that failed to bring anything new to the table. Mediocre filmmaking quality as well. The only upside: none of the cast were actually ugly#Ugliespic.twitter.com/rfsq4BPjZt
It’s easy to see why the audience feels this way aboutUglies. The story is already dated and formulaic, that’s why critics onRotten Tomatoesdid not hesitate to give it only a 22% approval rating. Some of the major criticisms include having a weak script that eventually wasted the potential of the cast, unpolished CGI effects, cheesy dialogues, and uninspired social commentary.

Uglies’ Tally Youngblood Was Joey King’s Dream Role
Uglieswould have fared really well during the 2010s at the height of the popularity of the YA genre, and Joey King seemed to be clinging to it despite the ship already sailing away. In her interview withCollider, she revealed that she loved the book when she was 11 and dreamed of playing Tally Youngblood when she’s old enough.
“Thank God he didn’t get it”: Austin Butler Could Have Been Jennifer Lawrence’s Love Interest in Hunger Games and Not Everyone is a Fan of That Idea
The cinema landscape has changed sinceThe Hunger Games, or evenDivergentandThe Maze Runner, premiered in theaters. Perhaps it’s not even the genre that fans didn’t like – it’s the mediocre execution that failed to capture the message of the book. Many readers loved the novel series, and it pained them to see their favorite story get a substandard screen adaptation.
Ugliesis currently available to watch on Netflix.
