President Donald Trump finally takes office as the 47th president of the United States, and while his supporters are celebrating, others like George R.R. Martin remain unimpressed. The famed author had been very vocal about his political stance over the years, and this included several remarks about the politician.

Westeros is all about power and control, and it’s very evident that modern governance had some sort of influence on Martin’s works. In fact, he likened Trump to one of the most despised characters inGame of Thrones.
Donald Trump reminds George R.R. Martin of Joffrey Baratheon
Donald Trumpbecamepresident of the United Statesfor the first time in 2017. During his campaign, writerGeorge R.R. Martinsaid the politician reminds him of Joffrey Baratheon, the young ruler and antagonist in HBO’sGame of Thrones. He was loathed for his attitude towards everyone, and he’s the epitome of a spoiled and sadistic brat.
While speaking with theNew York Times, Martin made a striking comparison between Joffrey and Trump, and what they both think they are doing as rulers. “They have the same level of emotional maturity,” the author said, although this wasn’t exactly flattering as Joffrey in the television adaptation was considered childish.

Joffrey likes to remind everyone that he’s king. And he thinks that gives him the ability to do anything. And we’re not an absolute monarchy, like Westeros is. We’re a constitutional republic. And yet, Trump doesn’t seem to know what that means. He thinks the presidency gives him the power to do anything.
Martin did not expound on other matters concerning today’s politics, but he emphasized that leaders today could take some notes from his novel series,A Song of Ice and Fire. He said that being a king—or a president—is about becoming the face of justice. It’s about serving the people and leaving the country a better place at the end of one’s term. It’s all about public service.

Throughout the show, Joffrey neither had any character development nor exerted effort to be a competent king. With Martin relating this role to Trump and his legacy, it seems he’s not quite satisfied with how the president runs the country.

Somehow, this reflects back on Joffrey and his incapability to run Westeros, let alone King’s Landing, due to his stubbornness and belief that being a king is his birthright. Indeed, Martin made a lot of spot-on points comparing the two controversial rulers.
