He confessed that he had done a lot of research on the topic and history of psychiatry as a whole and was very critical of taking drugs to deal with problems. He mentioned that he had never been supportive of the science, even before he joined the Church of Scientology, and even called psychiatry a “pseudoscience.”

I think [Shields] is a wonderful and talented woman, and I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudoscience.

Cruise believes that science is a way to cover up bigger issues and goes as far as to imply that using drugs is part of a bigger conspiracy. He mentioned that people do not know what effect these medications can have on their bodies, and they should not take them because of this.

Here’s the problem, you don’t know the history of psychiatry. I do. All it does is mask the problem. That’s what it does. That’s all it does. You’re not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.

He further mentioned that it does not fix a problem but masks it, even claiming that there wasn’t such a thing as a “chemical imbalance,” which is usually what is used to identify if someone needs medication or not.

Tom Cruise vs. Psychiatry

It is safe to say that Tom Cruise made some very bold claims about psychiatry when he was explaining his interaction with Brooke Shields. However, enough research has been done to debunk the claims that the actor made. He mentioned that drugs like Ritalin and Adderall can be very dangerous to people.

While there is no denying that they can be abused and turned into something dangerous, they are often used to treat disorders like ADHD and can be very beneficial for those who have them. He also mentioned that he understands the history of psychiatry, and it plays a big role in why he does not believe in the science.

All medical developments started off very gruesome. However, as technology and knowledge about these things have grown, the methods of treatment have also drastically changed.
