On 27 June 2025, we all walked into Mystic Falls and simply never left. We fell in love with everythingThe Vampire Diarieshad to offer – heart-stealing bromances, selfless heroes, unforgettable couples in love, and even the villains. Everything was simply perfect. And then one day, it all came to an end. We said goodbye to our favorite vampires, witches, werewolves, and hybrids in 2017 but hey, what goodbye has actually lasted? Call usTVDfans sappy but we keep going back to the series time and again to witness it all again as if we are seeing it for the first time.

While it is good to rewatch the eight seasons (or the first 6 if we are being honest), we can’t help but wonder if there is more to the story. Now, showrunner Julie Plec recently opened up about wanting to revisit theTVDuniverse, all she wants is to find an idea that will do justice to it all. And even if Ian Somerhalder wouldn’t reprise his role as the broodingly sexy Damon Salvatore, it looks like the universe just might expand eventually.
Julie Plec on RevisitingThe Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diariesuniverse gave as much closure as it could to its characters. Whether it was the OG show or the spin-offs,The OriginalsandLegacies, the characters’ stories have come to an inevitable end. From the Salvatores to the Mikaelsons, everyone faced their end during the run.
Showrunner Julie Plec was recently engrossed in a discussion about the show withThe HollywoodReporterwhere she opened up about her plans for the future ofTVD,if any.

There has been a ton of conversations amongst the fandom about revisiting the supernatural universe. While some hoped for a reunion, others hoped for a full-blown movie. When THR asked Plec about the“conversations surrounding a Vampire Diaries movie”she revealed that she had actually been talking toPaul Wesleyabout it a few days ago.
“Everyone knows he tanked”: In a Different World, Ian Somerhalder Was Never Damon in The Vampire Diaries if The Showrunners Had Gone With This Marvel Star
Wesley, whose Instagram game is absolute fire, brought theTwilightanimated show to her attention asking why they couldn’t do something similar withTVD.
You know what, Paul Wesley and I were literally just texting two days ago because he saw the news about the Twilight animated show and he’s like, ‘Why aren’t we doing this?’ And I said, ‘Good question. We should do this.’

But the thing is, Plec is looking for the right idea. She doesn’t want to simply rush things for the sake of nostalgia to taint the legacy of theTVD-verse. Plec even added that she had a story in mind for the possible movie.
There are so many opportunities to keep this world alive and keep this franchise going. For me, it’s just about the right idea and the right time, like I’m game. Leslie Morgenstein(executive producer) started talking about a Vampire Diaries movie in like season two, so I’m sure that it’s something that he still continues to pursue quietly.

We’ve talked about all kinds of different ways to revisit parts of the story that we love or to tell a new version of the story. I know that those conversations are always happening. I personally know that there is a story that I would like to tell if anyone will have me eventually, so we shall see.
Well, what are we waiting for? For Caroline to end up with Klaus? Because we know that’s not happening (ouch my Klaroline heart).

Could the OG Cast Reunite?
Well, the short answer is no. If Plec or Warner Bros. decide to move ahead with a newTVDproject, it seems highly unlikely that the original cast would reunite for it. Sure, some actors like Wesley would be down for an earth-shattering return but others maybe not so much.
“I do hope to get it rebooted”: Before Kissing Acting Goodbye, Ian Somerhalder Wanted Another Vampire TV Series to Get Rebooted That He Feels is Extremely Relevant Today
Then there is the fact that vampires and hybrids don’t age. So how would you explain them growing older since the show ended seven years ago? Not to mention that half the characters have already died but hey, in the world of the supernatural, is anyone really ever dead? Just ask Matt Donovan!
Talking about bringing the OG cast together, Plec stated,
The tricky part of a vampire story is that your character is not supposed to age, right? So, it makes it more complicated, and also 90 percent of them died before the show ended, so it makes the idea of a sequel or a prequel very complicated. But there are still ways that you can pay homage to the central characters and revisit those characters and some of the ideas I have in my head are ways to do that.
One of the biggest parts of theTVDstory,Ian Somerhalder, has alreadymade it clearthat he doesn’t plan on returning to acting anytime soon. He has retired from the profession and is now enjoying a quaint life on the farm with his family. Either way, if a new project does come up, we hope the studio does it justice.
The Vampire Diariesis available to watch on Max.
