Survios, the VR developer behind games likeCreed: Rise to Glory, recently began to flesh out their 2019 lineup by unveiling a pirate VR game calledBattlewake.Just one week later, the developer has unveiled its next title set to come to retail VR platforms in Fall 2019 -The Walking Dead: Onslaught.
Instead of drawing from the comics,The Walking Dead: Onslaughtties into the popular AMC series. AMC is collaborating with Survios for this project, meaning that several notable characters like Rick, Michonne, Carol, and Daryl (all pictured in the image above) can appear in the game. WhileThe Walking Dead: Onslaughtis tied to the TV show, Survios confirmed that the game will feature its own original story that showcases the show’s cast of characters attempting to survive the horrors of both the walkers and of the humans left. The last major non-mobile game to tie into the show was 2013’sThe Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.
When it comes to gameplay, The Walking Dead: Onslaughtwill feature both melee and long range weapons in a system the developers say will feature “progressive dismemberment.” The aforementioned story will take place in its own fleshed out campaign mode that will also feature a hefty progression system for players to mess around with. There will also be 48 weapon perks. While we haven’t seen gameplay yet, this series and premise does seem like a good fit for the medium.
The past year has been very interesting for games based onThe Walking Dead. The Final Season of Telltale’s critically acclaimed series almost wasn’t finished due to the developer’sabrupt shutdown;fortunately, Skybound Games revived the project and finished it this year. Meanwhile,Overkill’s The Walking Deadflopped, pushing publisher Starbreeze to thebrink of bankruptcyand eventually getting their rights to the IPcut off entirely by Skybound. Hopefully,The Walking Dead: Onslaughtfrom Survios fares has a smoother development and fares much better than the two aforementioned titles.
While the reveal trailer you can watch below doesn’t show anything in terms of actual gameplay, it does feature quite a few weapons fans of the show will recognize. The Walking Dead: Onslaught will come to unspecified VR platforms in Fall 2019.
