First released in 2016,Grimgar of Fantasy and Ashanime enjoys a dedicated fanbase as a result of its unique premise. Even after all these years, there have been no updates regarding a potential sequel of the series. While some fans still hold onto the hope that the isekai anime will return, it’s all but confirmed that the chances of that happening are slim.

Despite not hitting the mark in terms of popularity,Grimgar of Fantasy and Ashhas some great aspects that make it a great isekai experience for many fans. However, there are a few reasons that explain the low popularity, and here’s what they are!
This reason hurtGrimgar of Fantasy and Ash’s popularity
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ashis a story of Haruhiko and other young adventurers who wake up in a strange world. Without any clue about this new reality, they form a party to survive the dangers headed their way. The anime starts off strong and presents a more realistic setting compared to most isekai anime.
The exploration of complex emotions and the character development hooks fans to the narrative, but before they even realize it, the anime has already ended. With only 13 episodes, the anime adapts only the first few volumes of Ao Jumonji and Eiri Shirai’s light novels.

“That’s maybe a part of why the series is so popular”: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Editor Knows Why It’s Superior to All Isekai
Duringthose thirteen episodes, the plot progression is quite slow, which can be off-putting for some fans. However, what affects the story the most is the smaller number of episodes. The story reaches a great high in the fourth volume of the light novel, but the anime cuts off shortly after the second one.
It’s one of the main reasons why the anime isn’t as popular. If the anime had adapted the great parts from volume four with more episodes, it could’ve helped the popularity as explained by this Reddit comment.

Aside from the best parts being left out, the world-building could’ve been better as it often gets undermined due to character development. Given howGrimgar animeis more character-oriented, these criticisms can still be ignored. Most fans directed their attention to the light novel to experience the story after the anime.
The progression of the story after the anime
After the anime ends, there are almost 20 volumes of lore. Haruhiko and his party continue to face hardships and grow stronger. The light novel takes the characters to different worlds, and there are arguably some low points where the story feels redundant. However, in its final act, the narrative comes together beautifully, reminding the readers of why they initially started liking the story.
In the absence of a sequel, reading the light novel is a great alternative for fans to continue the story. Afterthe huge number of similar power-fantasy anime,Grimgar of Fantasy and Ashis a more unique take on the genre and its various tropes. And, an absolute must-watch for fans who like character-driven stories!

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ashis available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
