Besides the world-building and diverse characters,One Pieceis celebrated for its foreshadowing aspect. From Shanks’ Haki to Luffy’s Voice of All Things, Oda is a true master at foretelling events. With this aspect, however, Kishimoto isn’t too far behind.

This is especially true with his writing of Itachi’s character in the series. As the killer of The Uchiha clan, his persona as a greyscale character makes the series truly remarkable. Interestingly, the mangaka dropped hints early in the series.
Masashi Kishimoto foretold Itachi’s fate early on
Itachi Uchiha’sstory is a gut-wrenching tale of sacrifice, loss, and tragedy. His killing of the Uchiha clan reflects the ever-present moral conflict in the series. Of all the characters in Kishimoto’s series, he represents ambiguity with his moral compass.
Despite being a prodigy, his life was ridden with the perils of the ninja world. As a Uchiha, his identity did not exempt him from the brutalities that Konoha subjected most child soldiers to. But there’s more to it.

Through his agonizing backstory,Masashi Kishimotohighlighted the ever-present corruption and warped powerplay of leaders. The policies, along with decades of oppression, were something that was snubbed amidst the character’s glorification.
And while the fandom has questionedincessantly his morality, it is also his loyalty that most people believe is a “retcon”. In this aspect, though, the mangaka foretold his fate early on through his brilliant writing.

On X@SLightaptly articulated Kishimoto’s foretelling of the character’s true persona. And this is how most users responded.
Thread of Itachi Uchiha foreshadowing ✨Unfortunately there are some who believe Itachi’s character was retconned to being “good”. This couldn’t be further from the truth, and saying so is a disservice to the excellent writing that went into foreshadowing the characterpic.twitter.com/yjl4oCsh1m

One of the best threads I’ve read on this app no cap. Great job on pointing out those early viz mistranslations. The worst one is prob during the uchiha massacre flashback at VOTE when they ommited Itachi’s mention of the 3rd ms user which was wild
It’s crazy that people actually thought it was a retcon but even then I didn’t think there were this many small details planted

Juat read this and it’s goated. Another hint I’ve noticed is that when Sasuke “awakens” the sharingan against Haku he has 2 tomoe in one eye instead of 1, implying this isn’t the first time he’s used it. And he gets the second tomoe in the other eye while we see headband itachi
Awesome! You convinced me. I thought Kishimoto had figured out the twist no sooner than the VOTE fight because the flashback is very purposeful and Itachi is characterized very consistently with later but reading this shows it’s been true from the start
More often than not, the details and intricacies of the panels are lost in mistranslation, as some pointed out. Overall, the well-articulated thread pointed to a major aspect of Kishimoto’s series, which is foreshadowing.
While Oda’s series is top-tier in this trait, Kishimoto isn’t too far behind with his foretelling of the characters’ fate. With the unpacking of details, one thing is clear. Both series are on par with each other with a foreshadowing aspect.
One PieceandNarutoare evenly matched in the foreshadowing aspect
One Pieceis all about the details when it comes to foreshadowing. In this aspect, the series is hailed and praised thoroughly by fans. Be it Shanks’ Conqueror’s Haki or Ace’s death, Oda never fails to surprise the fans.
On most occasions, it unpacked plot twists and shocking revelations that sent fans into disbelief. And while the mangaka excels in this aspect, he may not be the clear winner after all.
Another great example of foreshadowing inNarutooccurred early on during the Sasuke Retrieval arc. The fight between the main characters at the Valley of the End was nothing short of legendary.
While both characters were evenly matched, Hashirama and Madara’s statues served as a metaphor for their foretelling. Both characters’ fate and connection to Indra and Asura Otsutsuki were outlined within thatone iconic scene.

This isn’t to say that Oda is superior to Kishimoto or vice versa. Both mangaka are legendary in their feats. While foreshadowing is a powerful tool in storytelling, Oda’s contemporaries are redefining it in their unique way.
One PieceandNarutoare available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Both manga are available for reading on Viz Media.
