It’s a well-known fact that the majority of video game adaptations on big screens are usually met with lackluster responses from audiences. Most of the casual theatergoers find them disappointing, and hardcore gamers feel the series didn’t live up to the original games.
However, that wasn’t the case with theResident Evilseries. The original live-action film brought together a number of talented actors and success that led to several sequels. The entire series didn’t receive high praise from critics but would have achieved a lot more if one of the industry’s best horror directors got his hands on it.

Whenever we talk about horror video games, only one name pops up:Resident Evil. However,when we talk about horror films, there’s only one king of the genre, George A. Romero. When his work“Night of the Living Dead”debuted all the way back in 1967, it completely changed how audiences saw zombies.

Considering Romero’s influence in the horror genre, it’s not a shock that he was approached to give the firstResident Evilmovie his twist. Romero’s connection to the franchise first came up when he decided to direct a commercial forResident Evil 2.
However, the movie under his belt never really came to fruition. Sony and Capcom decided to let Romero go because they didn’t like his screenplay. In the end, Paul W. S. Anderson directed the firstResident Evilmovie.
It’s quite sad that such an acclaimed director never got the chance to show what he could do with one of the best horror game franchises out there.
AnotherResident Evilmovie is on its way
According toThe InSneider,Barbariandirector Zach Cregger might be directing a brand new film for theResident Evilfranchise. He allegedly turned down the chance to direct theCluereboot and is now in talks for the horror franchise.
In the last couple of years, we’ve received severalResident Evilmovies, but none of them have managed to make it big. The last one was 2021’sResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The reboot by Johannes Roberts was faithful to the source material, but the reception was quite mixed.

The movie was shot in Sudbury, Ontario, and a sequel for it was also said to be in the works in that same location. Back in 2023, the city’s official website revealed that $2 million in funds were granted to Raccoon HG Film Productions to make a movie.
However, it’s been over a year, andSony hasn’t announced anything relatedto that film. It’s still not known how this will fit into a movie that Cregger is working on. There might be another reboot coming soon, or Creggor could piece together things from the last film.
