The ’70s were a roaring period for sci-fi releases, whether it be George Lucas’Star Warsor Ridley Scott’s universally acclaimedAlien. But despite the latter’s success, which proved to be a breakthrough hit for Scott, things behind the screen weren’t all sunshine and roses for theBlade Runnerdirector.

While theAlienfranchise is still going strong to this day and age, nothing holds a candle to the first two entries, but interestingly, the first feature wasn’t immune to criticism, which didn’t sit well with Scott.
Ridley Scott ripped complaints againstAliento shreds
Since reading one specific hit piece against hisBlade Runner, which rubbed theGladiatordirector the wrong way,Ridley Scotthasn’t bothered reading critiques of his works, stressing (viaTHR):
If it’s a good one, you can get a swollen head and forget yourself. And if it’s a bad one, you’re so depressed that it’s debilitating.

However, prior toBlade Runner, the director did concern himself with the discussions surrounding his works, especially during his breakout hitAlien.
Early Reviews of Gladiator 2 Prove Ridley Scott Has Broken the Sequel Curse, Entering Tom Cruise’s Arena
Despite being one of the most iconic sci-fi hits of all time, the film wasn’t immune to criticisms upon its debut. Recounting some complaints againstAlien, Scott recalled (viaThe New York Times):
The first film had absolutely no fat. It was all lean. People said the characters weren’t developed enough.

But theGladiatordirector was having none of it, as he clarified there is not much room for fat when“You’ve got this monster that’s gonna rip your head off in 20 minutes”. Fortunately, it didn’t get under his skin much, which can’t be said for that one negative review againstBlade Runner.
Ridley Scott wasn’t even considered forAliens
Although he was the fifth in line to directAlien, despite its success, the sequeldidn’t see him return. While Scott confessed that he wouldn’t have done the sequel anyway, as he didn’t want to go through the same process again at the time, the filmmaker revealed that the studio didn’t even consider him for the job (viaTHR).
Interestingly enough, I was never asked to do the sequel. Maybe because I was such a tough guy when I was doing it, they didn’t want me back. But I was also in the habit of not wanting to do a sequel then either. So I would never have done it.

Similar was the case surrounding theBlade Runnersequel, as he was never asked to return. But on the bright side, both sequels went on to match Scott’s standards, whether it be Cameron orDenis Villeneuve.
