The patience ofBatmanfans continues to be tested.

Earlier today, Warner Bros.announcedthat Matt Reeves’sThe Batman Part IIhad changed from an October 2026 release to October 2027. That puts a nearly six-year gap between the original and its sequel.

James Gunn, Co-Chairman of DC Studios and the grand architect of the DCU, gives constant updates on Threads. After news broke of the delay, he explained further:

The Batman Trilogy Confirmed

Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.

Warner Bros. Reportedly Developing New Game Set in The Batman Universe

A new video game based on Matt Reeves' The Batman could be in the works.

It Makes Sense Why Part II Got Delayed, But It Still Feels Bad

Production forPart IIwas scheduled for summer 2025. The two-year window Gunn mentions would make a 2026 release almost impossible. So pushing to October 2027 gives them all the runway they need.

With that said, it is disappointing to hear. Reeves started production onThe Batmanin 2020. You would hope that over the next four years that he’d have been making (even slow) progress on the script, since when Pattinson signed on it was for a multi-picture deal. Sure, in that time, Reeves also developedThe Penguin, but, geeze. As a fan, these long delays can feel pretty brutal. And it’s become ahuge trendin TV and film.

2026 was already being hailed as a gargantuan year for cinema, with the trifecta ofThe Batman Part II, Christopher Nolan’sThe Odyssey, and Denis Villeneuve’sDune:Messiahall sharing the year. But the dream of those three competing at the Oscars didn’t even last a week.
