Lucas’ idea of a small group of freedom fighters going against a powerful organization seems to have stemmed from the real-life happenings in the Vietnam War. The Viet Cong fought against the South Vietnamese government who were already supported by the United States. For Lucas, the smaller but determined Viet Cong group inspired the Rebel Alliance and the powerful presence of the US in South Vietnam manifested as the Empire in the franchise.
