Unlike Taylor Sheridan’s other acclaimed works, the writing inTulsa King, especially in season 2, was noticeably weak. From characters being incompetent and downright stupid at times (cough cough Tyson) to an underwhelming conclusion to season 2, the writing hasn’t been on par with Sheridan’s standards.
While theSicariowriter successfully penned memorable female characters in the past, unfortunately, the ones inTulsa Kingfailed to make a notable splash, which is the case with most of its supporting cast. However, things are different with his new Western tale,Landman, and Ali Larter has nothing but admiration for Sheridan’s ability to craft great characters.
Ali Larter Was Immediately on Board With Taylor Sheridan’s Writing
After theTulsa Kingseason 2 fumble,Taylor Sheridanis back to his roots withLandman, which somewhat feels like a return to form for the writer, especially after the controversy surroundingYellowstone‘s premature end. Notable for penning characters like Beth Dutton and Kate Macer,Landmanalso shows promise with its female cast, which includesDemi Moore‘s Cami and Ali Larter’s Angela.

While gushing about her role opposite Billy Bob Thornton, the actress commended Sheridan’s ability as a writer, adding“He’s the best writer working”. Elaborating on it, Larter shared that she was hooked by theSicarowriter’s way of describing women, stressing there is a good mix of strength and vulnerability. As for herLandmancounterpart, theObsessedstar recalled that Angela’s colorful personality nabbed her attention, adding (viaTaste of Country):
She is incredibly colorful. That’s why I wanted to play her! She’s fiery, and she fights for her family, and she loves to cause mischief. But she’s also someone who loves very deeply. She feels everything 110 percent, so not only when she feels the joy — it’s also moments when she feels the pain.
Similar to Larter, Demi Moore too found herself being immersed in Sheridan’s ability to craft“incredible, complex, dynamic and delicious”characters, as she deemed Cami thetrue powerbehind Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller.
Taylor Sheridan Had Little Input inTulsa King’s Mishaps
The discrepancy betweenTulsa KingandLandman‘s characters isn’t surprising, as it’s important to note that despite Sheridan’s executive producer status, he has little to do with its direction.Terence Winter, who has been in charge of theSylvester Stallone-led show since theSicariowriter penned the original pilot, shed light on theYellowstonecreator’s absence, stressing (viaTHR) :
Taylor wrote the original version of the pilot, gave it to me, and said, ‘Take it and run with it.’ And I did. I literally only met Taylor, in person, one time — and that was two-and-a-half years ago. We just went off and did the show with Sly and I hear Taylor likes it.
Sheridan can’t be entirely blamed for his lack of focus onTulsa King, as since hitting it big withYellowstone, the writer has been singlehandedly keeping Paramount Plus afloat in the current streaming climate.
