Overnight ratings of the first six episodes of the show have averaged around 2 million each, marking a significant downturn from previous seasons. The highest number is recorded by Episode 4,73 Yards,with 2.62 million while Episode 3,Boom, has recorded the lowest viewership not only for the season but for the franchise itself.

The series has also not been able to make that much of an impact during its post-airing viewership, as consolidated figures within seven days have shown only marginal improvement from their initial overnight numbers.

The showrunner Russell T. Davies has addressed the disappointing ratings, admitting that it is significantly lower than what they had expected.“We always wanted higher,”he said. However, he also noted that despite falling numbers, the series has managed to maintain a loyal audience demographic.

Despite the low ratings of the season, showrunner Russell T. Davies has remained optimistic, highlighting that viewership numbers tend to improve significantly over a 28-day period and its success among the young audience.
“I’m very proud of it! You know, they might not be the ratings we’d love,”he told Radio Times, as perDoctor Who TV,before adding,“But they are building over the 28-day period.”He pointed out how the first episode of the show, which aired a month ago, has crossed the mark of 5 million, a number that is expected to further increase in the future.

He also highlighted how the recent season ofDoctor Whohas been highly successful among the younger audience, a demographic typically challenging to engage in television in the age of streaming services. He told the outlet,
I was brought back in to bring in a youthful audience. That’s been massively successful — The audience no one ever gets are the under-30s. They just don’t watch television anymore. But those figures are astronomic for Doctor Who, it’s their top programme in that bracket.

“I never thought it was possible,”he said while stating that the show not only met but exceeded the set targets for viewership for the audience under 30.“The BBC are running around like mad things.”he further noted. Davies has also shared that the prospect of Gatwa reprising his role remains hopeful.
