The Sun Breathing or the Hinokami Kagura inDemon Slayeris one of the rarest and most powerful Breathing Styles. The creator, Yoriichi, taught it to Tanjiro Kamado’s descendant and a close friend of his, Sumiyoshi. The Kamado men pass it down from generation to generation through a ritual to the Sun God, along with the iconic Hanafuda earrings. Other Breathing Styles were created by Yoriichi to accommodate those outside of the family.
There is someone who could have continued the legacy of Sun Breathing hidden away. Murata, aDemon Slayercharacter who is another member of the Demon Slayer Corps, has caught the attention of fans for not only his kindness but his hidden potential. The boy has shown nothing speculator about himself other than his luck but is there more than what meets the eye?
The Legacy of Yoriichi and Tanjiro
Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the originator of the various Breathing Styles we witness in the anime, stands as the greatest demon slayer of all time. EvenMuzan, the main antagonist and strongest demon inDemon Slayer,is threatened by Yoriichi well after his death. His legacy has ultimately inspired the Tanjiro Kamado we know today.
Tanjiro, the protagonist ofDemon Slayer, inherits Yoriichi’s legacy both in spirit and technique. He eventually masters Sun Breathing through slow growth and training. The young boy embodies the ideals and compassion of Yoriichi, giving hope in the world ofDemon Slayer.It’s also important to note that the two wield black Nichirin Swords, recognising that they use Sun Breathing.

Murata’s Black Sword: A Sign of Untapped Potential?
Murata is a character who largely goes unnoticed and is initially introduced as a minor character inDemon Slayer.He’s usually on the sidelines assisting the major trio of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. However, one small detail that stands out is that Murata wields a black Nichirin sword. In the lore ofDemon Slayer, black swords are incredibly rare, and their meaning usually indicates mediocrity or curse.

However, Tanjiro and Yoriichi wield a black sword, and the young Kamado’s latent potential is eventually revealed. This raises the question: could Murata, too, possess an untapped potential that has not yet been realized?
Nichirin Swords change colour based on the user’s abilities and alignment with specific Breathing Styles. Tanjiro’s black sword eventually harmonizes with Sun Breathing, the most ancient and powerful of all techniques, but it takes time for this potential to manifest. Murata’s Water Breathing isn’t the strongest and is too faint to be seen. Moreover, his sword hasn’t turned blue which shows he hasn’t unlocked his potential. Could it be he has more to him?
Koyoharu Gotougemight have made him a minor character but his black Nichirin Sword might indicate he has an untapped potential for Sun Breathing. However, due to Gotouge’s writing, it simply means Murata probably has no natural affinity for demon slaying but the young man persists in his training anyway.
