Ogre BattleandTactics Ogredirector Yasumi Matsuno revealed in a pretty roundabout way to be working on a new project.

As you already know by now, Japanese sites Famitsu and 4Gamer each published their traditional end-of-the-year interviews. Hundreds of Japanese developers shared their thoughts on 2021 and aspirations for 2022.

We learned in particular that Yasumi Matsuno, the writer of theOgre Battle/Tactics Ogre seriesis working on something new. Matsuno is also the original writer of the Ivalice setting and its first gamesFinal Fantasy TacticsandVagrant Story,

Hironobu Sakaguchi teases Yasumi Matsuno is writing a new story

When asked for his favorite person of 2021 by 4Gamer, Hironobu Sakaguchi said it’s Yasumi Matsuno.

Hironobu Sakaguchi:“Yasumi Matsuno seems to be writing a new scenario. I don’t know what kind of project it’ll be but I’m really looking forward to it”.

Yasumi Matsuno himself was not interviewed by either Famitsu or 4Gamer. Don’t get your hopes up too high too, as this new project could be anything. Hironobu Sakaguchi seems genuinely curious too. So it’s unlikely that Matsuno is actually working with Sakaguchi on a new project at Mistwalker.

Mistwalker just launched a new JRPG,Fantasian, inspired byFinal Fantasy 6.WhileFantasianis a critical success, many never played it as it’s only available on Apple Arcade.

Is Yasumi Matsuno working on a newTactics Ogreproject again?

Square Enix makes the final call on that, as the copyrights holder. And since this looks to be a more personal project from Matsuno, this is a very unlikely scenario.

Matsuno could be writing something for a futureFinal Fantasy XIVexpansion with Square Enix though. Matsuno already wrote the Ivalice-related events ofFFXIV.In an interview I translated back then, Matsuno mentionedhe’d like to go back toTactics Ogreat least once in his life.

Personally speaking, I’m a huge fan of Matsuno’s works andTactics Ogrein particular. Always hoping for new games in the series. You can always fanboy with me about the serieson Twitteras we wait.
