I’ve been an avid speedrun fan for several years now, so I was pretty excited to see thatGiant Squid, creators of Sword Of The Sea, decided to include a trophy for completing the game in under two hours.

I’m not an actual speedrunner myself, but I do aspire to be one someday. As such, it seemed like this two hour timer for Sword Of The Sea could be a nice way to get my speedrunning sea-legs.

Sword of the sea credits

Playing through the game naturally and casually takes around five-or-so hours total, so shaving this down to no more than 120 minutes on a subseuqent playthrough could’ve been a nice challenge.

Turns out, however, the Speed Surfer trophy iswayeasier to earn than you would have ever expected. Let me explain.

Sword of the sea boss

Step 1: Beat The Game Normally

First things first; just play Sword Of The Sea until you roll credits. There’s no need to even consider running this beautiful game as a speedrun first, so just take your time, explore, and beat the game whenever you beat it. Trust me, this is the optimal way to play the game first.

After beating the game once, you unlock a chapter select feature to go back and retry any part of the story that you’d like to see and explore again. This is where this trophy gets a little… interesting.

Step 2: Replay The Final Boss Fight

You might expect that this is the point where you’d either jump into NG+ or start practicing smaller sections of the game to nail down optimal routes, memorize everything, take notes, and prep as much as you can for a sub-two hourspeedrunattempt.

Don’t waste your time.

Instead, all you need to do to earn this trophy is beat the game normally, then load back into the final level, Sky Abyss. Here, you’ll have to fight the final boss one more time. After defeating the boss and rolling credits again, the speedrun trophy is yours.

Yes, you read that correctly. This trophy is setup so that you donotneed to play the entire game again in order to get your reward. This may feel like a cheap way to earn what could’ve been a fun achievement, but at the end of the day, a trophy is a trophy.

Actual Tips

While this is how I ultimately earned this achievement, I won’t fault anyone for actually wanting to earn it the way that was probably intended. Here are some tips if you’re one of the few who will actually attempt to break sub-two hours even after hearing about this easy exploit:
