The final season of any beloved series always feels bittersweet, but it feels doubly so forSuperman & Lois. On top of the fan-favorite adaptation being cut from its planned seven-season run to just four, the end of the series also represents the end of a long-standing partnership between DC Comics andThe CW.

Real Reason Behind CW’s Superman And Lois Getting Cancelled Had Nothing To Do With Series’ Performance

The network first collaborated with DC for 2001’sSmallvilleback when it was still called The WB Network and hit the zenith of its partnership with theArrowversebeginning in 2012. Though not set in the Arrowverse continuity,Superman & Loisis the last remaining vestige of it and the DC/CW partnership as a whole. Once it’s done, that’s it.

Real Reason Behind CW’s Superman And Lois Getting Cancelled Had Nothing To Do With Series’ Performance

But as DC prepares to move on to focus on the James Gunn-helmed DCU and The CW moves forward to do….. whatever it is they’re planning to do next, doesSuperman & Loisat least get a proper goodbye? In my opinion, yes. Though please bear in mind that this only applies to the first three episodes, as that was what was made available to me at time of writing.

What isSuperman & LoisSeason 4 about?

Season 4 picks up almost immediately from where Season 3 leaves off. Lex Luthor has just been released from prison and is preparing to take his revenge on the Lane/Kent family; while Superman is locked in battle with his most dangerous foe yet, the monstrous Doomsday. As uncertainty looms on both a personal and grand scale, everyone’s favorite Smallville family must learn to navigate the unknown one step at a time.

How isSuperman & LoisSeason 4?

While most of the CW DC shows tended to decline later in their runs, even if they all at least remained fun,Superman & Loiscontinues to impress in these final episodes. Action and fight choreography remain amongst the best of the DC/CW line-up, though the visual effects remain a mixed bag at best given the limited budget.

Each of these episodes feels like it has a distinct beginning, middle, and end while contributing to a compelling and genuinely surprising ongoing story. These episodes go places that I did not expect them to go and while I don’t feel like I have a strong grasp of where the season is going; that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Bitsie Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin as Lois Lane and Clark Kent in Superman & Lois Season 4

And much of the effectiveness of that surprise can be contributed to just how good this show’s cast really is.Tyler Hoechlinstill fits Superman like a glove as to be expected; but the highlight is by far Bitsie Tulloch, Michael Bishop, and Alex Garfin as Lois and the Kent twins. All three of them bring such raw emotion and depth to these characters and it is an incredible sight to see play out on screen.

Also, Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor is probably the scariest version of the character in quite some time. I feel like most modern incarnations of Lex have either leaned on self-parody or focused more on his intellect than his menace. Cudlitz’s Lex is still smart, don’t get me wrong, but he also comes off as someone who would not hesitate to kill you in one of twelve different methods if the mood struck him and that kind of screen presence is great for a villain.

Tayler Buck and Wolé Parks as Natalie Irons and John Henry Irons in Superman & Lois Season 4

Aside from the aforementioned visuals and some minor pacing problems, my only real issue is that, at least so far, the show continues to straight-wash both Jonathan Kent and Natalie Irons, who are bi and lesbian respectively in the comics but appear to be nothing but heterosexual here. It doesn’t have too much impact on the show as a whole, but given how good the Arrowverse was at LGBTQ+ representation, it is certainly disappointing.

IsSuperman & LoisSeason 4 worth watching?

From the beginning,Superman & Loishas occupied the upper echelon of CW DC shows thanks to its (slightly) higher budget and greater emotional depth in comparison to most of its contemporaries. And even now, at the end, it maintains and arguably surpasses that high standard of quality.

The action is great, the emotion is palpable, and the storytelling is consistently engaging and surprising. If the rest of the season can keep up with the quality of these first three episodes, then the CW/DC partnership is guaranteed to go out on a high note.
