Konamihas announced they will be remastering the originalSuikoden(1995) and its sequel Suikoden 2 (1998).

Last week,a Mexican trademark filing for Suikoden surfaced. This led many to speculate that Konami’s “new game in a beloved series” planned announcement at Tokyo Game Show would be Suikoden related. That speculation turned out to be correct as Konami confirmed the original two games would be getting remasters, set for release sometime next year.

While some had hoped thatMetal Gear SolidorSilent Hillwould be making a return, it’s Suikoden that ended up being Konami’s big announcement. While the series doesn’t have the popularity of the aforementioned franchises, hardcore JRPG fans will likely be excited by the upcoming remasters.

The official title of the game is Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. Yes, it’s a bit of a mouthful. These games will be bundled into a single package and will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. The trailer, viewable below, shows off some snippets of the remaster.

It’s been almost three decades since the release of the original Suikoden, so Konami had a lot of updating to do. The sprites, environments and character portraits have all been updated. In fact, Junko Kawano, who drew the portraits for the original Suikoden, has returned to re-draw the new character portraits for the original’s remaster. There have been several new animations and effects added judging from the trailer.

Konami has also revealed that new environmental sounds like running water, the wind and the buzzing of insects have been added. The sound system, in general, has been updated to make the game more “realistic.”

In addition to the graphical and sound overhauls, the remastered Suidoken will have several quality-of-life gameplay changes implemented. These include a dialogue log, auto battling feature and the ability to speed up battles.

There is no specific release date on these remasters as of yet but Konami has announced they will be coming sometime next year.
