In 2011, legendary Japanese game developers Goichi “Suda51” Suda and Shinji Mikami released Shadows of the Damned, a demon-hunting action-adventure game published byElectronic Arts.
The game wasn’t a commercial success, but plenty of critics had positive things to say about it, and it holds a 76 metascore on review aggregatorMetacritic. The development process was fraught with controversy, with both Suda and Mikami both complaining about how heavy-handed EA was in the process.

I do have a soft spot in my heart for the characters in the game, specifically Garcia Hotspur and Fleming.

“BioShock in space” isn’t a bad starting point.
Shadows of the Damned tells the story of Garcia Hotspur, a motorcycle-riding demon hunter whose girlfriend is abducted by Fleming, the Lord of Demons. Garcia follows Fleming into the Underworld as he embarks on a mission to save his girlfriend.
Now, Suda’sGrasshopper Manufactureis releasing an unexpected remake, due for release later this year. Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Suda51 Loves A Good Sequel
In an interview with our friends atGameRant, Suda revealed that if the remaster proves popular, a sequel is something he’d be interested in pursuing.
“Putting out a sequel is something we would like to consider,” he began. “Even if we don’t end up putting out a straight-up sequel or continuation or whatever, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the characters in the game, specifically Garcia Hotspur and Fleming.”

Suda added that he considered giving Fleming a major role in his 2021 hack-and-slash game No More Heroes 3. “Having these characters come out in something again, whether it’s a sequel or something else, is highly possible,” Suda said.
Currently, Suda51 is collaborating with Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro (Deadly Premonition) on Hotel Barcelona, a 2.5D hack and slash “slasher film parody.” It looks bizarre, as you’d expect from the duo.
