One of the most memorable horror games to come out in recent years was the highly unique and utterly terrifying Still Wakes The Deep. Set aboard a Scottish oil rig called Beira D, things quickly take a turn for the worse when the crew accidentally drill into something which awakens a supernatural, Lovecraftian entity from the depths.

Developed by Brighton-based studio The Chinese Room, Still Wakes The Deep may have flown under the radar for some gamers last year, butreceived very positive reviews overall, with many players praising its immersive story and soundtrack in particular.

10 Criminally Underrated AA Horror Games

Not quite indie, not quite AAA, but definitely terrifying.

Now, one year on from its original release, Still Wakes The Deep is getting a surprise DLC called Siren’s Rest, set to release on the 18th of June, which looks every bit asclaustrophobic and intense as the original.

Psychological Horror Adventure Stray Souls protagonist Daniel stands outside his grandmother’s home.

Taking place ten years after the events of the original game, this time players will approach the disaster through the perspective of an investigative diver named Mhairi.

Revisiting The Wreckage

Even if, like me, you played through the original story several times over, leaving no stone unturned or passageway unexplored, Still Wakes The Deep nonetheless leaves many questions unanswered.

Just what exactly wasitthat consumed the crew of the Beira D?What might its purpose have been? How was it able to induce telepathic hallucinations and physical mutations? These remain unknown. What we do know is that nobody managed to escape, and only thanks to the courageous decision of protagonist Cameron “Caz” McLeary to set alight the entire rig wasthe creature held at bay.

Though it seems Siren’s Rest may focus less on the grotesque and gory monsters of the first game, you may bet that there will still be surprises in store among the tangled remains of the doomed oil rig.

The fully-submerged underwater setting also opens the door to plenty of new scares and supernatural elements, with additional survival mechanics such as the management of light and oxygen also likely to play a role.

Though the decision to announce the DLC afterthe showcase events of last weekendis a bit of a strange one from a marketing perspective, personally I think this is one of the most exciting announcements of the year.

With just over a week to go until the Siren’s Rest DLC arrives, you still have time to jump in and play the original story for the first time. Either way, June is set to deliver on another Scottish Lovecraftian horror story, and I am all for it.

We Need More Midwestern Horror Games

There is a distinct void of horror games (and video games in general) that take place in Midwest America – a void that needs to be filled.
