At this point in theRyujin Industriesfactionquestline in the vast space ofStarfield, working as a junior operative for the mega corporation is beginning to feel repetitive. To date, Imogene has had the player engage incorporate espionage to exact revenge on competitorsby disrupting and destroying their work and committing other petty offenses.

In Background Checks, however, the player is sent on a mission thatunravels the upper echelon of Ryujin employees— and many important decisions for this faction begin here.

How To Complete Background Checks
After a conversation withMasako and Ularuand learning of a mole within Ryujin Industries, the player is sent toDalton Fiennes, the head of security. The player is then informed that it is time to engage in Directive Theta. In other words, the player will need to meet with Dalton’s mutual beneficiary Nyx beforesneaking into Ryujin Industrieswithout being caught in orderto steal information from Ularu’s computer.
Travel to Neon, and enter Madam Sauvage’s clubin the Ebbside part of the city. Within, Nyx will offer to help the player after hearing mention of Dalton, but it will come at a cost (unless a persuasion check works). The player can choose to pay Nyx 2,500 credits or complete a side objective for him in return for his work with Directive Theta.
The easier choice is to persuade Nyx down to 1,000 credits for the information, but should money be an issue, the side objective is not too difficult to complete.
Once Nyx has been paid accordingly, he will explain how to run the program on Ularu’s computer (and Camden’s if venturing down that path). Return to Ryujin Industries by following the quest marker to a vent in Ebbside, which will lead to headquarters.
Remember toleave any companion outsideor at the very beginning of the mission, because they willtrigger the guards’ attention.
Remove a space suit if currently wearing one andequip the best stealth gear available before crouching through the HQ. The player has been explicitly asked not to kill anyone, but it is certainly possible to kill all guards because there are no actual consequences for doing so (outside the Ryujin board members distaste and dislike of your actions). Usingstealthin Starfield can be questionable, so be careful.
Follow the quest markers again to reach Ularu’s computer, which requires careful navigation of multiple floors. Wait for guards to turn their backs before crouch-walking to the next hiding spot. There are a few places where guards seemingly have impeccable eyes, so dispose of them as necessary.Dalton provided a disruptor, which stuns enemies rather than the fatal alternative. Do not forget to hitCamden’s computer, too, if completing the extra work for Nyx. After, return to Nyx’s apartment in Ebbside and wait for him to upload all the data onto a slate for Dalton.
Of course, Nyx takes the opportunity to read some of the information from Ularu’s computer, and he casts his judgment upon Imogene.With a potential traitor possibly identified, return to Dalton to complete the task at hand. Try to grapple with the potential traitor’s identification and return to Dalton to discuss the mole.
How To Complete Nyx’s Side Objective
If the persuasion attempt to knock down the credit expenditure from 2,500 credits to 1,000 credits fails, or if spending credits to procure Nyx’s work seems too high, the computer whiz will offer a side objective.He asks the player to run the program designed to capture information from Ularu’s desk on Camden Cho’s desk, too. Do this while infiltrating Ryujin Industries HQ to satisfy the quest requirements.
Completing this side objective will cost Camden Cho his job.
Consider the consequences of such actions for future missions before deciding to accept Nyx’s mission. Depending upon the choices made inBackground Checksand thesubsequent mission, Guilty Parties, the future of Ryujin Industries may hang in the balance.
