With the imminent release ofSonic X Shadow Generationson July 26, 2025, many fans have questioned what will happen to the originalSonic Generations Collectionon Steam.
Luckily, in anFAQ post regarding delisting,Segastated they will still be delisting the original on September 9th butwill still be “offering a way to play the game in its original form.”

From a PlayStation star to a Game Pass frontman.
Instead of erasing the game off Steam like many other companies,it will now bepart of a “Sonic the Hedgehog Legacy Bundle”that includes the following games for a retail price of $59.99:
Game Title:
Current Steam Price:
Sonic Generations Collection
Sonic Adventure DX
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2

Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic Spinball
Whether this bundle is worth the hefty price tag may be up for debate by fans. Regardless, it’s great to see a company not justremove a game from Steamdespite likely calls from a financial standpoint that doing so would hurt the sails of the newer version.

SEGA’s Decision Is A Boon For Dedicated Modders
Also, asPCGamer explains, this new update is important because “Sonic Generations has hada decade of modding and fan work that would start to wither without a legal way to get the game.” As the Sega FAQ states, players will luckily “still be able to mod the game” through the release in the bundle.
Regarding game preservation, many ask why it’s important for a company to continue selling a game with a newer version out already.

A great illustration is the huge letdown ofGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy—The Definitive Edition, which was releasedwith major bugs and was almost unplayablewhile simultaneously taking consumers' original way of playing out of their hands.
While fans are confident inSonic X Shadow Generations' quality, it’s nice to know thata previous version will still be availablefor a new release of an updated game that could almost become apotential ticking time bombof lost content. Hopefully, Sega’s decision will become more commonplace in the gaming industry.

With Sonic X Shadow Generations fast approaching, we are excited to see more of our blue hedgehog friend and his dark and mysterious counterpart.
