The overall feel of any anime or manga series is decided by the way it concludes the story. The ending is a crucial part of any series or movie, and it makes or breaks the success of the art form. A similar thing happened with Rumiko Takahashi’sInuyasha.WhileInuyashais one of the most prominent anime series of the 90s, some fans are to this day disappointed by its ending.

Although the narrative majorly focused on fantasy and adventure, fans expected the series to have a sad ending considering the different parts of the stories. Inuyashaportrays the journey of its protagonist, Inuyasha, a half-demon, and Kagome Higurashi, the reincarnation of the feudal era miko, Kikyo. They are on a mission to find the contents of the Shikon jewel, which is a powerful ornament that grants dangerous strength to both humans and demons and can be used to win against any opponent.

The story gets exciting when Naraku, the main antagonist ofInuyasha, is introduced. Both Inuyasha and Kagome go through a lot of struggles, battles, and hardships. They are also accompanied by other characters like Sango, Miroku, Kohaku, and Shippo on theirjourney filled with dramatic thrillers.
While the overall structure of the narrative looked pretty tense, the ending had happiness to it as all the main characters essentially got what they required in life. Sango and Miroku get married and have children; Kohaku still remains a demon slayer; Shippo enhances his demon magic; and Kagome finishes her graduation and returns back to the Sengoku period to marry Inuyasha and become a priestess.

Takahashi’s Real Reason Behind A Happy Ending forInuyasha
TheRumic worldonce interviewed Takahashi regardingInuyashaand the various aspects of the narrative. During the interview, theInuyashamanga creator was asked about the reason behind giving every character a happy ending. Takahashi revealed that it was for her own personal satisfaction.
Takahashi stated:
Writing characters to have happy endings is so I can feel good about the story once I’ve finished it. Even when I’m writing stories with a lot of sadness and hardship, I like stories where it’s all redeemed somewhere.
AlthoughRumiko Takahashiunderstands the complexities of the characters withinInuyasha, she still feels the need to give them a happy ending so that it makes her feel good about the narrative as a whole.
