Among the main crew ofFriends, Matt LeBlanc’s Joey remains one of the most likable of the six, and for rightful reasons. Not only was he the heart of the Matthew Perry-led sitcom, which continues to be a phenomenon even decades after its conclusion, but time and time again Joey proved to be the most caring person in the friends group.
This further adds to the tragedy of Joey never getting his deserved happy ending in both the main show and his spin-off. But had another potentialFriendsspin-off gotten off the ground, things could’ve been different.
Joey Could’ve Got His Deserved Ending in a Potential Matthew Perry-led Spin-off
Despite being one of the most caring individuals on the show, who didn’t shy away from standing up for his friends, by the end of the sitcom, Joey never got his fairytale sitcom ending. However, a potential Monica and Chandler spin-off might’ve filled this hole had the idea ever materialized. A potential spin-off about Monica and Chandler’s married life could’ve gotten the ball rolling in Joey’s romantic life by havingMatt LeBlanc‘s character meet a romantic interest, or by simply having him married.

Interestingly, before theJoeyspin-off, the creative heads at NBC were initiallyinclinedtowards the idea of a Monica and Chandler spin-off. However, according to executive producer Kevin S. Bright,Matthew PerryandCourteney Coxweren’t on board with the idea of reprising their roles in a spin-off revolving around their lives as suburban parents.
While they were grateful for doing the show, they didn’t want to play those parts anymore.
While many fans felt a spin-off might’ve been around the corner, as sitcoms continue to boom in the modern landscape, given Perry’s tragic death last year, the idea no longer seems feasible.
The Writers Initially Intended for Joey and Monica to End up Together
Although it’s a shame Joey never got his fairytale ending, the writers originally intended Cox’s Monica and LeBlanc’s Joey to end up together. However, given the overwhelming reception to Monica and Chandler’s bond, which was initially meant to be a thing for a brief period, the Joey and Monica plotline was then discarded in favor of Perry and Cox’s blooming chemistry. Speaking of it, showrunner Marta Kauffmanadded:
We were stunned. So that’s when we sort of went, ‘Huh, guess this is going in a different direction
While things could’ve been different had his own spin-offJoeyran a little longer, which was cut short after two underwhelming seasons, to this date, he remains one of the biggest fan-favorites from the renowned sitcom.
