Berserkis a tale full of betrayal beyond justified, questionable morality, and the lengths at which power can destroy the world. Kentaro Miura has created the blueprint of dark epic fantasy anime that nobody can truly surpass in the industry unless they want to go beyond the boundaries the mangaka went. It’s a brutal story that isn’t for the faint of heart.
Griffith, the main antagonist ofBerserk,evolves into a power-hungry leader who would sacrifice anyone for his cause. His charisma and vision of a Utopia allow him to draw in anybody, including the protagonist, Guts. However, not everyone was so charmed by his efforts after seeing his true colors.
Rickert is an unassuming character who doesn’t stand out until the Band of Falcon’s demise at the hands of Griffith which angers him to new levels. The survivor’s guilt he felt after his comrades were killed prompted him to slap Griffith in front of his subjects, shocking everyone, including the antagonist. It seemedBerserkhad a new fan-favorite on their hands as fans cheered Rickert on.
Rickert gave Griffith what he rightfully deserved inBerserk
To say Griffith deserves this slap from Rickert is an understatement. Some fans argue he deserves worse to be done to him after the atrocities he’s done for his own sake. Nobody expected Rickert to actually strike back in such an eloquent way. He got his thoughts across to his former and gave him a nice wake-up call, stating that he would not serve him anymore and that not everybody is enticed by his schemes.

The Band of the Falcon was led by Griffith and consisted of Guts, Casca, Rickert, and others. Pippin, a member, was one Rickert shared a brotherly bond with and was sacrificed during the Eclipse. He felt an intense amount of guilt for surviving as well. There’s no wonder he slapped Griffith when his own brother figure died because of him.
The Eclipse event opened Rickert’s eyes to who Griffith truly is; a tyrant. Withthe exception of Guts, Casca, and Rickert, the remaining members of the Band of the Falcon were sacrificed to become a vessel for their leader’s selfishascension into the God Hand, turning into the powerful entity known as Femto.
Knowing Griffith’s twisted form of leadership, he didn’t have a second thought in slapping the leader across the face. It doesn’t necessarily mean he entirely hates Griffith, knowing the Utopia he created did help people, but the Griffith he admired died in his eyes after he knew the lengths he’d go to achieve his petty goals.
Rickert’s honor and why fans love this moment
Rickert might’ve been the youngest member in the Band of the Falcon and perhaps naive but he opened his eyes when others didn’t. The slap was a much-needed act of rebellion against Griffith’s rule. He also showed honor when he created the Hill of Swords to commemorate the fallen soldiers.

Fans absolutely loved and anticipated this moment when such a simple act could show more rebellion and integrity than any otherBerserkscene. Rickert is also the only person who’s laid a hand on Griffith. That’s whyKentaro Miurais a genius at depicting morality.
