Resident Evil Movie Reboot Director Fan Of Series “For Decades”

In a new report by entertainment publicationDeadline, it mentions that the Resident Evil movie franchise will be staying at Sony. The latest company knocking at the door was Warner Bros., but Sony managed to fend them off.

The still-untitled Resident Evil, which is said to be a reboot and have no connection to Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil movie series, will be released on June 30, 2025. The release date seems a little too soon, given that, as far as we’re aware, there are no stars attached to the movie. This indicates that Sony wants this film in theaters as soon as possible.

Of course, given that the movie is quite far off, don’t be surprised to see that date change. As is the case with video game release dates, these things do get moved around a lot.

Resident Evil 5 Remaster Likely Thanks To ESRB Rating

Resident Evil 5 could be coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, based on a new age rating by the ESRB.

One of the reasons Sony is itching to get the movie out is because it’s being directed by Zach Cregger, the director of the critically lauded film, Barbarian. Cregger will also be co-writing the movie’s script along with Shay Hatten (Ballerina, John Wick Chapter 3 and Chapter 4). No details about it have been revealed other than it should stay faithful to the horror franchise’s roots.

Cregger isn’t just a director who wants to film a reboot of the franchise, but he’s also a big fan of the games, too. “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor," Cregger said about helming the reboot.

Aside from Sony Pictures, Constantin Film will be co-producing and co-financing the project. PlayStation Productions will be part of the producers as well.

The previous Resident Evil films have all been released under Sony Pictures. This includes the film series by Paul W.S. Anderson and Resident Evil: Raccoon City, released in 2021. To date, the film franchise has amassed $1.2 billion in revenue worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing video game feature film franchises of all-time.

Let’s hope Cregger stays faithful to the games this time and delivers a film worthy of the Resident Evil name.
