The Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming. AlthoughNintendohas confirmed the existence of a new console in the past, it hastaken its time to officially reveal it.

That time may finally be coming, though. Several industry insiders predict that this is the week Nintendo unveils the Nintendo Switch 2.

Metroid Prime 4

The Nate the Hate Podcastreports that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be revealed sometime this week, possibly as early as Thursday, January 16th. Tom Warren, Senior Editor for Verge, chimes in on the story, indicating that he has heard the same thing from his sources.

Warren also adds that he believes that Microsoft will have several Xbox titles ready for Switch 2, similar to howHi-Fi Rush,Grounded, andPentimentall eventually made their way to the Nintendo Switch.

Switch 2 is reportedly as powerful as a PS4 Pro, so it can handle some more graphically demanding recently released games.

What To Expect from the Switch 2

For those looking for a major innovation in the Switch 2 hardware, you’ll be disappointed. The Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly a more powerful Nintendo Switch, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Nintendo found success by combining a home and portable console into one device.

The new system is confirmed to bebackward compatible, meaning all of your Nintendo Switch games will play on the Switch 2. Nintendo feels that this is the best direction to allow consumers to play their existing Nintendo Switch library on its successor. Whether or not this includes digital games remains to be seen; Nintendo has not exactly handled the Virtual Console well when upgrading to new systems. Being able to still own our digital and classic Nintendo games would be a welcome change, especially with the success ofNintendo Switch Online.

As for the games we’d expect to see on Switch 2, the obvious choice to headline a software launch line-up isMetroid Prime 4: Beyond. Don’t be surprised if we see a newMario Kartor 3DSuper Mariogame as well.
