Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock earned himself a high spot in Hollywood after his initial box office success. However, his latest projects are struggling to meet the standard that he once set himself. His unstoppable momentum has hit a roadblock, and even his larger-than-life persona might not be enough to get past the recent hurdles.

Red One, his newly released action-comedy has made critics and fans question whether his star power is now fading, and it is even enough to carry a film to success. With his previous lackluster performances, and the recent movie also being a letdown, the road ahead looks quite rocky for The Rock (pun intended).
Dwayne Johnson’sRed Oneis Met with Mixed Reactions and Critic Backlash
Red Onebeing the latest addition to Dwayne Johnson’s filmography, has garnered a barrage of negative reviews. With only a 40% score onRotten Tomatoes, the film’s reception has been lukewarm, even though it had a high budget, supported by big names.
Critics have been vocal about how the film relies heavily on CGI and lacks genuine emotional depth. As per the early reviews, the heart and humor seem to be missing, and overall, it’s a forgetful project. Perhaps adding more wholesome moments, and not relying too much on digital effects could’ve saved the film, but who’s to tell?

If you’ve been closely following Johnson’s film trajectory, you’ll notice that these reviews point out a growing issue in his solo ventures. Even though he has the star power to pull a massive audience into theatres, it won’t be of much use if the film doesn’t deliver what it promises.
The Setbacks of Dwayne Johnson’s Recent Career Choices
This isn’t the first time thatDwayne Johnsonhas had a tough time at the box office and with the critics. In 2022, the poor performance of a major movie likeBlack Adamdespite the heavy budget, marketing, and association with DC, came as a major blow to his career.
Jungle Cruise, released in 2021 was another one of his movies that did not hit the mark. It wasn’t a complete failure, but it was nowhere close to the success of Disney’s other franchises. Moreover, his Netflix hitRed Notice, a star-studded film, did not quite live up to the hype.

The movie performed well on the streaming platform, but the critics weren’t particularly pleased with it. Even his much-anticipated return to theFast and Furiousfranchise did not match the financial and critical boost that one would expect.
Dwayne Johnson’s career seems to be at a crossroads, and his track record isn’t as impressive as it once was. However, many actors often have a small dent in their careers, a streak where their movies don’t perform well, and Johnson seems to be going through that period as of now.

Red Onewill be in theatres on 09 August 2025.
