However, Red Dead Redemption 2 wouldn’t be the same without its characters. Through and through, the characters seem to be the heart and soul of the game. They each have their own level of depth, conveying their backstories through their actions and the story. Here are, considerably, the most iconic ones in the entire game.
** SPOILERS FOR Red Dead Redemption 2 AHEAD **
10Abigail Roberts
While she was a more prominent character in the first Red Dead Redemption, Abigail Robert’s spotlight in Red Dead Redemption 2 is nothing small. Since the game serves as a prequel, we get the chance to see Abigail’s backstory before she became John Marston’s wife.
She is a wise and kind-hearted soul, caring about John and her son, Jack, with her entire being. However, John and Abigail still seem to have their ups and downs throughout the game. When we get the chance to speak with her, it becomes apparent that she and Arthur have a history together. Although we don’t get to see her too often, Abigail plays an important part in Red Dead Redemption 2’s story.

9Rains Fall
Sadly, we don’t get the chance to see Rains Fall as often as we should through Red Dead Redemption 2. Although, the impact that he leaves on the story and us is admirable. He is a pacifist and chief of the Wapiti tribe, being an amazing all-around character worth knowing.
Rains Fall faces utter hardships as he tries to protect his tribe in a cruel world. He’ll come to you asking for protection for his tribe, and accepting his request leads to him leaving a profound impact on you. All-in-all, he is a tragic character that you’ll encounter, trying to merely live a life full of safety and straying from resorting to violence.

8Micah Bell
Micah Bell is a lot more than just the main antagonist. He is wild and unpredictable, preferring to live on the wild side of things rather than settle for any sense of comfort. With the belief that the Van der Linde gang is pretentious, Micah strays away from the crowd.

It’s from his growing distaste toward Arthur that we see Micah’s malicious personality shine the brightest. He isn’t necessarily evil, but his intentions of only playing the cards in his favor make his betrayal toward us feel personal. Regardless, no matter how much we can dislike him, he is a well-developed character that stands out from being a typical villain.
7Lenny Summers
Even though Lenny and Arthur weren’t exactly the closest, their bond with one another was heartfelt. Lenny Summers is an intelligent and fun-loving man, having joined the Van der Linde gang at only fifteen years old. Overall, he’s viewed as one of the best men in the whole gang in Arthur and Hosea’s eyes.
However, Lenny’s story suddenly ends as he’s unexpectedly killed by the Pinkertons in front of our eyes. His death feels like it comes in the blink of an eye, catching many of us off-guard. But, even after his death, we remember Lenny fondly. Particularly, drinking with him during the memorable mission “A Quiet Time” is a moment in the game that we’ll never forget.

6Hosea Matthews
This is a quick-witted character that you’ll definitely want to stick around with. Hosea Matthews is Dutch’s right-hand man and Arthur’s father figure. He’s a con man and a gentleman at the same time, loving the life he leads full of robbery. Ultimately, he is truly the brains of the operation.
Hosea will remind you of a lively family member. He dreamed of being a comedian, being a theatric light in a grim world for us. On top of this, his knowledge of the world and his experiences have transformed him into a wise figure. With this said, if we didn’t have Hosea, who knows what the more endearing parts of Red Dead Redemption 2 would look like?

5John Marston
While he loses the main spotlight in Red Dead Redemption 2, the encounters that we have with John Marston are significant to us. Especially when it comes to absorbing the more emotional side of both games in the series. John is Arthur’s best friend. They grew up with one another and soon became outlaws, joining the Van der Linde.
His backstory is tragic, which makes him easily connect with Arthur. The two are nearly one-in-the-same, and their relationship is nothing short of heartfelt. John is both impatient and hard-working, understanding the rough hardships that he must face. Once you play the epilogue, you’ll feel more connected to John than ever before.

4Charles Smith
Charles Smith is a significant character in the story. He is one of the few members of the gang to follow the code, leading him to be a quiet and reserved outlaw. Charles, more or so, is represented as an outsider. However, despite how much he remains in the shadows, he’s a well-loved character in the Red Dead Redemption fanbase.
Fans desire Charles to be the main protagonist for the next game in the series. Exploring his backstory and how his demeanor has become so stoic is admirable. Seeing a prequel detailing one of the gang’s most hard-working members sounds more than thrilling, not to mention his profound impact on the events in Red Dead Redemption 2.
3Sadie Adler
After being rescued by Dutch, Arthur, and Micah, this fantastic heroine isa better gunslingerthan many other outlaws. We encounter Sadie Adler very early in the game. From there, we get the chance to see her blossom into a strong person who can hold her own in a fight.

Sadie is a very tough-natured person, influencing the main story in the game through her fantastic personality. She utterly stands out among the rest of the characters in the game, remarkably showcasing her skills as she’s gotten to know everyone in the gang–especially Arthur. Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to see Sadie in later games, as it’s clear that there’s more to her story.
2Dutch Van Der Linde
What makes Dutch’s betrayal of Arthur worse is how he’s been one of Arthur’s closest friends for quite some time. Dutch van der Linde is the founder of the Van der Linde gang. His actions are vastly motivated by his aspirations, leading him to be intelligent yet easily violent at times.
However, no matter how quickly he can get angry, Dutch is a good man at heart. He set out on the story’s journey to protect his family but ended up getting lost in the violence surrounding him on the way. He is a significant character in the story, and who is he truly connects with the game’s overall themes.
1Arthur Morgan
Of course, the spot for the most iconic Red Dead Redemption 2 character goes to the main protagonist of one of the greatest video games of the past decade. Arthur Morgan is tough yet gentle, never daring to back down from a fight when need be. Even though we can influence his actions, who he is at his core will never change.
He lives a life of crime by choice, being a complete outlaw. His entire personality is rather ambiguous, making his depth even more intriguing to experience first-hand. Arthur’sdeath is one that hits uswhere it hurts, and we’ll never forget the parting words that he left with us toward the end.
