For PS5 Pro owners, there’s something to get excited for outside of games in 2026, as a software update planned for the console is set to hit, which will improve performance.
This was something confirmed by PS5 system architect Mark Cerny, who talked about the tech improvements on the way for Sony’s latest PlayStation hardware.

New features have been added to enhance it as well.
Note that this performance update is exclusively for the PS5 Pro, though it doesn’t mean the base PS5 won’t get an update alongside it, which houses other improvements.
PS5 Pro System Update For 2026 Confirmed
In an interview byTom’s Guide, Mark Cerny mentioned they are working on implementing an advanced graphics upscaling algorithm for the PS5 Pro that should deliver better performance than the existing PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) tech, which was one of the key features the beefier console has than its brethren.
Cerny says this new tech “is a drop-in replacement for the current PSSR,” which should make it easier for developers to implement when it arrives on PS5 Pro sometime next year.

This new upscaling tech, which is co-developed with AMD, will offer a more advanced algorithm and will significantly improve framerates and even image quality.
No timeframe has been given, and chances are, we should hear about this system update before it goes live. Most likely, Cerny & Co. will explain the technical nuances of it outside of just telling people to download the update for better graphics.

There is no release date available for when this will be released, though.
While nothing has been announced for the base PS5, chances are high that Sony releases a system update that adds new features to the console, though we should hear about it first before it’s pushed live, as Sony conducts closed beta tests for every new major PS5 system update—something the company detailed earlier this year as part ofthe PlayStation Beta programthat even PC players can take part in.

Aside from new features, we also get fixes to nagging issues that sometimes go undocumented, such as the VRR (variable refresh rate) fix that was applied in thePS5’s June firmware patch.
