Larvitar is a rock-ground type first introduced in the second generation ofPokemon. Its evolutions Pupitar and especially Tyranitar, are popular in their own right, with Tyranitar ditching the ground type for dark. If you wish to gain Tyranitar or its pre-evolutions inScarlet and Violet, there’s good and bad news. Larvitar has many spawn locations, butonly in Scarlet.

The Godzilla-lookalike can be a great addition to your Pokemon party should you be playing Scarlet, while the Violet players' option is hoping for a trade and perhaps something of a runner-up.

Larvitar can be found in many locations across the Paldea region; however, this Pokemon is not a common spawn. The Pokedex claims that it’s rarely seen, and without the help ofsandwich buffs, you may be waiting a long time for a Larvitar to spawn.
What won’t help is looking in the wrong parts of the area.Larvitar is a rock-type and tends to like the more mountain-like terrains. The Pokedex says it lives in caves, which is true, but those are not the only locations to look out for. You can find them out in the open, but Larvitar tends to keep to itself, so when you are in an area that claims to have Larvitar spawns, look around the cliffs, as that’s most likely the location where you will find one.

The hills near the marshland of South Province Area Five can be a great place to catch Larvitar during the early game. Not just to have the Pokemon on your team as soon as possible but also to be more likely to find one at a low level, which will make this rare spawn much easier to capture. With Larvitar captured, all you have to do is let it battle enough times to reach the level where it evolves.
Larvitar evolves into Pupitar at level 30.This has been true since Gold and Silver and has stayed true for Scarlet and Violet. In order to fill your Pokedex, you will need to start at Larvitar; however, not every trainer wishes to check every box and only care about their absolute favorites. For those players, or simply for players who know they can go anywhere in Paldea from the word go, there is one location in Pokemon Scarlet where Pupitar can be found in the wild.

In Area Six of South Province, just outside Alfornada, there is a cave that serves as the only spot where wild Pupitar spawns. If you want to evolve Tyranitar without starting at Larvitar, only want Pupitar, or wish to shiny hunt Pupitar, this is the cave you will need to search. Pupitar is also a rare spawn, but thanks to being confined to only one area, it may be quicker to find than its pre-evolution.
Catching Pupitar won’t be so easy. The Pokemon in Area Six’s cave are in the low forties level-wise.Bring plenty of Ultra Balls and especially Dusk Balls, as you’ll need them.

Your Pupitar will evolve into a Tyranitar at level 55.As stated by the Pokedex, there are no locations in the wild where Tyranitar will spawn. There’s technically a workaround with this, as Tyranitar can be found during a Tera Raid. However, Tyranitar will not spawn in Tera Raids until youunlock the highest star ratingsand will be subject to the same RNG as every Pokemon in terms of what spawns during a Tera Raid.Larvitar and Pupitar also have a chance at being in Tera Raids, but at the lower levels, so do consider looking in the early-game raids for unique Tera Types. That said, regular Larvitarcantechnically become a unique Tera Type.
Ground Tera Typing
Larvitar and Pupitar are rock-groundtypes, but when they evolve into Tyranitar, they become rock-darktypes.Pay attention to the Tera Type of your Larvitar or Pupitar because if it has the ground type, your Tyranitar will effectively have a unique Tera Type without any extra effort. There’s no need to do Tera Raids or collect Tera Shards, and this will especially be useful to players who got us out of STAB moves such as Earthquake.
All that remains is how Violet players can obtain this Pokemon line.
How To Get Them In Violet
When it comes to Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar, the players of Violet will have to make do with the fact it is on the list of exclusives for the Scarlet version. You cannot catch them in the wild, but if you have a friend willing to trade you, possibly for one of your version exclusives, you will be just fine. Surprise trades, of course, run just as much chance of suddenly gaining the Pokemon you dearly want but also just whatever a trainer decided to throw away.
Now, there is one other thing to note for players of Violet.
The Paradox Pokemon equivalent of Tyranitar is the futuristic Iron Thorns, making it a Violet exclusive. While Violet players don’t get wild Larvitar, they do get the lookalike of its final form, which may be more than enough of a consolation prize.
