GTA V yearly earnings are the highest they’ve been since launch, putting GTA 6 in a precarious spot.

Several days ago, Take-Tworevealed the numbersfor its first quarter of the fiscal year 2022, which showed impressive numbers forGTA V, almost sealingGTA 6’sfate for the future. The eight-year-oldGTAtitle almost hit one billion dollars in earnings between 2020 - 2021, which is the second-highest earned year since the game launched in 2013.

Last month, I reported on myYouTube channelthat despite the rumours ofGTA 6releasing in 2023, it’s sadly not the case. The news was backed up by prominent game journalistJason Schreier, who said “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard”.My speculation following the information that was revealed is thatGTA Vwon’t release until at least 2024 - 2025, with one of the main reasons being that GTA V is still doing incredibly well. The “when willGTA 6release” question is a simple one to answer - It won’t unlessGTA Vearnings start to plummet. Put yourself in Rockstar Games' shoes; would you releaseGTA 6if your 8-year-old title is bringing in almost $1 billion in a year? Probably not.

GTA V Microtransactions

What’s interesting about the numbers is that the majority of the earnings for 2020 - 2021 have largely been generated from microtransactions, proving that theGTA Vbusiness model is not only strong but growing.GTA Vbroke headlines when it was first released, smashing the $1 billion mark in just three days, a feat that no other game has achieved. So even without the added bonus of a release,GTA Vis still steamrolling ahead with no signs of slowing down.

What putsGTA 6in a worse spot is that Rockstar Games still haveGTA V Enhanced and Expandedto release later this year, which will almost certainly giveGTA Vanother record-breaking year. Details on the Enhanced and Expanded edition are still unclear, but with a massive audience still clearly ready to purchase whatever Rockstar throws at them, it’s going to do well regardless.

GTA 6 To Be The Last GTA Title

I said a couple of weeks back thatGTA 6 could be the last GTA titleand, to be honest, these numbers from Take-Two onGTA Vhave made me feel even more confident about these claims. Rockstar Games are aiming to makeGTA 6as future-proof as possible and ifGTA Vcan last over a decade, it wouldn’t surprise me ifGTA 6could do a hell of a lot longer.

GTA V Enhanced and Expandedis due to release on November 11 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5.
