After months of rumors, speculation, and anticipation, the momentElden Ringfans around the world had been waiting for finally arrived yesterday.FromSoftwareand Bandai Namco have finally released the first trailer for Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring’s highly anticipated DLC.

The expansion, which is due to launch on June 21st for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, is priced at a pretty hefty $39.99 / £34.99. While this isn’t a ludicrous price for a DLC that is expected to be gigantic, both in terms of hype and actual content, it does prove that FromSoftware has cemented itself as one of the all-time great developers. I’m pretty confident Shadow of the Erdtree could be $70 and people would still pay for it.

I’d rather spend an hour cooking a tough boss than jumping across some slippery ledges.

Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not. In a time where Ubisoft is charging $70 for awatered-down version of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag,Naughty Dog is churning out remastersleft, right, and center, and Rockstar Games has only just brought Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition to an acceptable standard, it’s refreshing to see the community put every ounce of trust into a developer that many believe to be the G.O.A.T.

And you don’t just need to take my word for it either. Over on X (formerly Twitter), hundreds and hundreds of users explained exactly why they’ll happily pay $40 for a DLC from FromSoftware. Although fans presented numerous different explanations, many believe the price tag is representative of the sheer scale of the expansion.

The Erdtree in Elden Ring

While we’ll have to wait until June 21st to find out just how big Shadow of the Erdtree really is, FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki recently toldEurogamerthat this would be the studio’s “largest expansion to date.” The official description states that the expansion “features an all-new story set in the Land of Shadow imbued with mystery, perilous dungeons, and new enemies, weapons and equipment.”

Others pointed out that FromSoftware has built up enough trust with the community that they believe the $40 will be worth every penny. Some users even said that Shadow of the Erdtree could have cost $200 (Collection Edition or not) and they still would have purchased it.

“FromSoft literally NEVER misses with DLC. No doubt in my mind that this will be the best 40 bucks I’ve ever spent in my entire life.” -Mont via X.

FromSoftware’s last two major expansions, Dark Souls III: The Ringed City and Bloodborne: The Old Hunters, have Metacritic scores of82and87, respectively. With such high praise from both critics and fans, it’s no surprise that the community is expecting a monumental DLC for Elden Ring, especially when you take into account that it has overtaken The Last Of Us: Part II tobecome the most-awarded game of the year winner.
