One Piecehas been a massive universe that Oda spun like a spider spins its webs. The world has had a very high level of world-building and a huge roster of characters who each have their own individualities.

When each character has their own dreams and behavior, with their own motives for doing what they do, it turnsOne Pieceinto a series with constant surprises and reveals. And that’s an understatement, as Oda has been introducing a new twist in almost every new chapter.

This takes away any certainty before a matter has been ironed out in words, but Oda seldom allows for that. One Piecehas always thrived on mystery, but the most confusing aspect of the series could be said to be the identity of Shanks and whether or not he is really evil.

Shamrock’s reveal only leads to more questions

The recent reveal of Shamrock (a man who appears to be Shanks’ twin or a look-alike) has sent fans into rampaging debates about the true nature of Shanks andwhether Shanks and Shamrock are working together. Another idea being floated about is that they are the same person, and it is all an elaborate truck, a sham.

While this twist provides an explanation for past inconsistencies with Shanks being in different places at the same time, it does not clear Shanks of suspicion for being the final antagonist and a hidden evil. If anything, the reveal seems to be a safety net for Shanks as it adds even more layers to his already complex persona.

One Piece: Oda May Have Finally Revealed Evil Shanks’ True Purpose in Elbaph That Solves the ‘Certain Pirate’ Mystery

The “Evil Shanks” theory has been around for years, especially since Shanks seems to have two sides: an ‘approachable neighbor’ and a ‘terrifying seafarer’. This theory gained traction whenever Shanks was getting involved in any grand events, as they believed he was the cause and the controller.

Oda is playing the long game with Evil Shanks

This new twist in Shamrock’s existence might explain many problems that the readers found with Shanks’ past appearances, but it does nothing to disprove the fact Shanks could still turn out to be the final antagonist that Luffy might have to face.

In fact, it makes it even more plausible since Shamrock’s existence and his appearance bearing a striking resemblance to that of Shanks’s could mean that he has had an accomplice all along. That is how he managedto pull the strings from behind the scenes.

Shanks rarely engages in direct combat, hinting at his true nature of being cautious and the mastermind who would instead influence the major world powers and events.

Shanks stopped the Marineford War, warned the Gorosei about Luffy, and remained safe and sound despite being a Yonko. If this was all an elaborate plan, it could mean that Shanks has been playing everyone since the very beginning.

One Pieceis available to read on Viz Media and can be streamed on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
