Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagarecently crashed into theaters, marking our return to theMad MaxUniverse. However, an homage to Hideo Kojima’sMetal Gear Solidseries has sparked debate. Is theDunestar Oscar Issac the best fit to play the titular Solid Snake?

In a blink-and-you-miss-it scene, Praetorian Jack, as portrayed by Tom Burke, dons black face paint which produced a striking similarity to Snake’s bandana. The mixture of stealth-like cinematic combat and makeup instantly caught the attention of movie-goers.
Kojima Agrees With His Fans about Furiosa Star
Fans lost their collective minds at the site of Burke’s performance in the new entry intotheMad Maxseries,Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And for good reason. In a clip circulating on X, Burke’s character can be seen striking down foes with tactical precision. As the camera shifts, his bright, focused eyes, beneath the thick black grease paint across his foreheadevoke the imagery ofMetal Gear Solidprotagonist, Solid Snake.
It’s like you can feel the very instant where Hideo Kojima’s brain surged with light and expanded like a cell undergoing mitosishttps://t.co/EanlzzlvBC

To some, this was a fun nod to a game they love. But to others, it was a moment where they saw eye to eye withMetal Gear‘s creator Hideo Kojima.

In a post to X, Kojima came forward admitting he believed that Burke was a striking fit for aMetal Gearfilm adaptation. His understated appearance and even the way he speaks reflected the true nature of Snake:
Both Anya and Chris Hemsworth are great, but these two are even more eye-catching… Jack (Tsuda Kenjiro), Furiosa’s mentor, is played by Tom Burke. To me, he looked just like Snake.

Don’t Forget Oscar Isaac! You can’t forget Oscar Isaac!!
Despite the initial fanfare at the news thatDuneandMoon Knightstar Oscar Isaac would play the role of Snake in the upcoming film adaptation, that attitude has since soured. Many fans are pushing to replace Isaac, arguing that even Kojima agrees Burke is a better fit.
However, this argument will likely fall on deaf ears.Although Kojima created the series, his involvement in the film and ownership of theMetal Gearlicense is not what many fans wish it was.

TheMetal Gearfilm’s director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, has made it clear that he cares deeply aboutKojima’s vision and wishes he was more involved. However, due to legal issues with publisher Konami, this can’t happen. Fans will have to settle for Oscar Isaac in the lead role.
But it’s super important to me that he – I would love to have him as involved as I could… And I think Kojima-san also, as much as he ….would want to be involved, also wants to respect me as the director.”
Although, this might not be such a bad thing. In interviews, Isaac opened up about being a gamer, and although we might miss out on a better-looking Snake, it’s easy to believe Isaac will do the role justice.

The inclusion of aMetal GearEaster Egg may not be as out of left field as people may expect. For many years Kojima has included references and callbacks to action and sci-fi films of the 1980’s.
The character Solid Snake, himself, was inspired by the 1981 film,Escape From New York. The game developer drew heavily from the character Snake Plissken, not only in name, but Kurt Russell’s performance was used to guide how Solid Snake’s attitude was written. Furthermore, theMetal Gearcharacter Venom Snake’s constant silence drew heavily from Max’s silence in the sequelMad Max 2.
Ultimately, the decision to reference theMetal GearinFuriosa: A Mad Max Saga, feels like a passing of the torch. An open acknowledgment of the success of the next generation of creators.
